What oil in australia?

Hi,

In Australia we don't seem to have the same range of oil as elsewhere. For example we only have mobil 1 5w50. Since i just got my car, i want to change all fluids etc, even though the oil looks fine. My car has no records, so i don't know when or whether anything has done. But the air filter is clean and the oil looks new, so it seems as though it has just been serviced. However to play it safe, i'm still gonna change it all. I don't know if my car has been running on synthetic or mineral. Right now it all runs great with no leaks. Should i try mobil 1 or another synthetic? or stick to mineral oils like valvoline. Here in melbourne the temp at most ranges from 5-35 celsius year round, so thats like 41 - 95 fernheit . Is 5w50 mobil 1 ok?

Now i know this has been covered heaps of times, and believe me i've read almost all the oil threads. But it seems to uncertain, like some experience leaks, some don't. By the way my car is an 86 3.2. The mobil website suggests that i use Mobil Synth S 10W40

IIRC, the Mobil site had incorrect viscosity info for many cars. I'd go with the manufacturers recomendation to be on the safe side.

Here in Madrid the temperature range is similar and my mechanic (reputedly one of the best Porsche specialists in the country) uses Valvoline 20W50 on my car.

Supposedly you do not need syntethics in old cars and if you change your oil regularly (each 5-10k km) you do not need the improved properties of synth oil.

5W50 Mobil-1 will be fine for short drain intervals (say 5000 miles).

I have been using Fuchs Titan Supersyn in my '76 Carrera for some 12 months now without issue.

Have a look at this website, they have a cool product locator that specifies the product for your particular model.

http://www.fuchs.com.au/

The only issue is that there are very limited outlets for the products, however they generally offer a delivery service for a small overhead.

Note, even though they are a German company they are not the same comany as the wheel manufacturer, but its pretty cool anyway.

Castrol Magnatech 10w40...semi-syn; ideal.

Freely available in OZ and cheap enough to not worry about changing every 3000mile or 6-8 months.

JZ Machtech in the UK who are that country's top rated independant rate this as the oil to use for all 911's 1973 to 1993.

My sc with 267,000km on the engine uses Mobil 10w-40 Synthetic.

I don't service it myself, but the car goes to a respected Porsche Mechanic in Melbourne.

If the engine was fresher he would have opted for Mobil 1.

Staygold808,

I'm sure there are at least 3 grades of Mobil 1 available in Oz. Just stepped out of Weltmeister's front office and there were 3 grades on display.

I have an '85 and it runs on dino oil 15w40 as it's almost clocked 200k kms, but I'm sure the heavier synthetics will work too.

I'm glad some one asked this question in Aussie. I am flushing out the oil system in my 2.4MFI with Castrol GTX2 currently. Planned on running it thru for a 1000ks or so then change again to a more expensive oil. But is the Castrol GTX2 good enough? Have used this in aircooled VW for years with out any issues.

Staygold..Use Fuchs Titan, cheaper and better than Mobil 1. My 3.2 has never felt better. Just on 200,000kms.

Does Mobil make a synthetic that isn't Mobil 1? Or did you mean to say non-synthetic?
