Good deal???

Let me know what you think...

1975 911, yellow in color, 95,000 miles, all instraments gauges work, 2.7 engine, nothing done to it that I know of, 15" fuchs, interrior good cond, runs good, shifts good. Non-sunroof model, and manual window cranks.

Problem areas...

Rust on the both front fenders(has one rust free fender included), lower front valance, and the lower front corners of both doors. Battery tray is rusted, pans rust free. Leaks oil at valve covers(easy fix w/turbo covers and gaskets), and does not have chain tensioners.

$4000 but will consider less. He also has doors, and 16" wheels available. Give me some opinions, and thoughts please.

Thanks,
Phil

Phil,

I don't know how closely you have looked at this car, but my guess is that the rust you see is only the tip of the ice burg. I am not a body repair expert, and would not consider buying this car to fix up. It may make a good track car. If you are good at body repair and welding, and know what you are getting into, it may be OK. Even with a good body, this car is only worth about $6000 to $7000, and a good professional paint job will cost more than the car is worth. Unless you are looking for a project, and can do all work yourself, it is always money well spent to get as nice of a car as you can.

Best of Luck - Rex

In general, it is MO that if it runs, its not eaten alive with rust, and its not bent, its a good deal at less than $5k.

a less than perfect '75 will not command a premium. The '75-'77 2.7 cars are probably the least desirable cars out there. That doesnt mean you cant get a nice car at a good price. If its still running at 95k, it more than likely has had some engine work.

The rust situation could easily cost more than the asking price of the car to fix based on what youve said already. You will not know the full extent of the rust until you start taking the car apart. There is going to be more rust in that car than you can see. There always is.

As a owner who's been down this road with more than one car with the (less than dependable) 2.7 it would be well worth your time to have the motor throughly checked out. The materials used to make those blocks are scrape off the casting room floor. Fixes are very costly and can still leave you with a weak motor. The studs holding the block halves together "will pull" some day requiring a complete take down to install case savers and repair damage caused by the seperation of the block and heads.
The rust is a major concern too. Consider continuing to look for a car that won't keep you at the top of your local repair shop's Christmas list!

Not necessarily. But, as stated, rust can either be in general because of environment, or local because of a specific problem. This one sounds more like "in general." The doors are fixable, but not as easy as bolting on a new fender. If you do decide to [u]bolt]/u] on some doors, I hear they can be had for about 200/ea.

However, you can't bolt on a battery tray. And when you say battery tray, you are really saying front suspension pan, or at least gas tank support. That is a common fix and if you DIY, it doesn't cost much. But I'd look further, like behind and below the door strikes and under the rear glass. You can check that out by opening the engine lid, pulling down the insulation had using a light and mirror.

If the car passes inspection on the floors, rear deck and lock posts, it might be worth a go. As you can see, DIY is king here. If you can get all the work done and ready for paint, painting itself is cheap. A few hundred dollars will buy a good, not show quality, paint job with you doing the grunt work.

This leaves the mecahnicals. Another story for somebody else, but a lot has been said already. If you want a casual driver and like to work on cars, offer as low into the 3's as you can get it, take all the extras and sell what you don't use.

If this car were local to me, I'd jump on it like a duck on a June bug.

Thaks for all the input on the car. I have read about the 2.7 motor problems, and their costly fix. The rust is bubbling under the paint, no holes through the body(except battery tray of which there is a 6" diameter hole),but will be checked "deeper" before making an offer.
