Cause of a wobbly steering whee?
What are the possible causes of a wobbly steering wheel?
The wobble/vibration ONLY occurs violently between 100km/h - 120km/h (i.e: 60mp/h - 75mp/h). Quite annoying on the FWY since the limit here is 100km/h on most FWY's ![]() SO, I either have to stay under 100, or go over 120!!! Is this an easy fix?

Sorry, forgot to mention that I can actually wobble the steering column up'n'down with the vehicle stationary.

Are you sure the welds aren't broken in the spokes. The wheel is 'loose' front to back and makes a clicking noise.

Check the steering column bushing right behind the steering wheel. Simple and cheap to fix.

If it only happens when braking then it is very likely warped rotors. If all the time then what everybody else said is probably the case

Replace steering wheel bushing first, 15 minute job if you have an impact gun.
Then have the tires checked for balance or run out. Sometimes tires have chord seperation and will cause the shaking, or they can get flatspotted and no amount of balancing will take care of it. Don't ask how I know that one. You haven't locked up your front tires lately, have you? |

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Nope, haven't locked her up lately.
Will have to check the bushing as suggested. Don't have an impact gun tho ![]() Thanks for that URL too. Very informative

I'm experiencing the same thing. Had the wheels balanced and the wobble is now at 70 instead of 80 mph.
The problem started after I installed my new 19" wheels and tires. It may have done it before with the 16" Fuchs but nowhere near as bad as it is now. I cannot move my steering column up or down though. Do you guys think it could be the bushing if the column doesn't move? I was thinking that maybe the extra weight of the new wheels may be causing the shocks to rebound improperly. Any suggestions about suspension that may help if it turns out not to be the bushing? |
