Identify these gaskets and win
My gratitude anyway...
Ordered the "top end" gasket kit. Basically you get a bunch o'gaskets and o-rings for you to do a top end = make sense, right? Well, you get the gaskets - sandwitched between some cardboard and plastic - some in seperate bags. Anyway - having some difficulty identifying these - help - they were all in one bag together...

The top right one looks like the o-ring for the oil thermostat.

Not to be picky but aren't 4 of the 5 really o-rings
so the one in the upper left is a number 5 o-ring..... Ok all kidding aside #4 looks like the o-ring for the throttle body

My guess is that no. 4 is the O-ring for the oil filter console. But that's not really part of the engine, is it?

2 is a muffler gasket. It's made from graphite - it goes between the cross-over and the cat. Part number is 911 111 189 03. When the top end comes apart the muffler comes of. This is why it's included. What did I win??

I agree that #2 is an exhaust gasket, #3 appears to be an oil return tube o-ring seal, #5 o-rings look like they might be for the block mounted oil cooler. Guessing at #1 to be the distributor base seal and #4 could be for the throttle body.

1.) intermediate shaft or t-stat seal.
2.) exhaust gasket. 3.) case oil-passage seal? 4.) #8 bearing o-ring? 5.) timing chain cover/tensioner seals? Only other guess is they are for stuff your car doesn't need, like smog pump or turbo system seals. |

Eric - #1 is correct Intermediate shaft
#2 is exhaust (don;t need) #4 is throttle body seal #3 case oil passage - it's not big enough

Hmmm, only other guess on #3 is an o-ring for something your particular car doesn't need, like smog pump or a turbo system seal maybe?
Oh, and what about #5? Last edited by Eric Coffey; 07-31-2005 at 11:52 AM.. |

#5 looks more like an 8-ring than an O-ring.

#2 has been in the last 3 topend gasket kits I bought. Ya, its and exhuast gasket all right, but it does not fit any motor up to 3.2. I believe it is for a 964 style exhuast that fastens with clamps and not flanges with bolts. I have some if anyone needs them!!
