Bike Rack for my 911

I am tired of taking the wheels off my bike and stuffing it in the back of the 911...and top that with the fact that my downhill bike will not fit at all.

I was thinking of mounting a bike block on the rear bumper area and a strap at the top of the rear glass (as seen on the extra wide R-Gruppe monster) for a minimal approach.

Ideas on how to mount this? I would use two bike blocks, one for a regular QR and one for a 20mm TA on the downhill bike.

I'v been thinking about this my self for some time now and come up with an idea.
Take one gutter mount roof rack and fit a QR to it one on each side just in from the ends say about 8". and have some foam (closed sell foam) on the whale tail near the rubber bit, place the forks in the QR fitting on the roof rack fitted to the rear of the roof (need to fiddle to find the best spot) and the rear wheel sits on the foam with a tie down to stop it moving about. It works.
The roof rack needs to be a good one, and can easily be removed.
Good luck Steve.

k9:

Another option would be to use either standard Yakimo or Thule racks with bases designed for cars with rain gutters (just be sure to use rubbers hoses where the bases meet the paint). These mounts work great for two bikes as well as anything else you may need to schlep around.

Here's the set-up I use:

That is what I was looking at...just don't want to destroy my reflector to mount it.

I ordered the plate mount from Sports Unlimited. It was back ordered for months with no response. I canceled the order and got it elsewhere for just under $200 and it came right away.

FYI, if you have a bike that does not have a right angle, 90 degree, between the horizontal and vertical tubes, you will need to modify.

K9, how about a 3/16 - 1/4" aluminum metal plate mounted behind the license plate that extend's up to allow mounting the fork mount to it?

I would enjoy understanding how the bike is mounted on the other side of the engine cover on that first concept.

me too. i would like one for a cab. I have thought about the trailer hitch type with a removable trailer hitch (maybe 4 bolts to the underside of the AL bumper).

Uhh..wow. That is something!

From looking at it, it seems the bikes front fork goes into the mount, and the bike+rear wheel simply ride behind the Porsche as it drives! Wonder how the bikes rear tire does (in terms of tread) at those speeds.

I found a Saris Bones rack fits perfect. Great for a Cab where a roof rack isn't an option. It would probably even clear the tail on Steve's car.

No...I think the bike is mounted the oposite way with the rear wheel resting on the back glass. This is where I think a strap could hold the wheel in place.

89turbocabmike...that is the plan, thank you for the idea.
