Is 24 mpg reasonable?
I just drove to/from Cincinnati (554 miles round-trip) in my '74 911 Targa. My wife and I, our luggage, spare tire, targa top, etc... and we got 24 mpg on the trip. The road was smooth, very little traffic and I averaged about 60mph, with mostly driving in 5th gear. I am very happy with 24 mpg, what do you think? Is 24 mpg "reasonable"?
|
I'd kill for 24 mpg....
|
Try 12 mpg at 70 mph........yeah 24 looks good!
|
I was VERY happy with Helga's performance, she ran well and solid the entire trip. I had never driven her that far in one day before and now I'm definitely driving her to Hershey next April. The round-trip mileage will be 1000 miles, but I'm up for it!

That is an unusual name for your wife, she must be German.
|
Craig911,
Very funny!! My wife is German and French and her name is Beth. Our kids named the Porsche. I used to have a VW Westfalia that they named Gretchen... |
That is good stuff, The best I get out of my 2.2 with carbs is 26 (going downhill) but I do get 22-24 on long constant speed trips. 9-12 in town. Have you seen how much fuel coms shooting out every time you press the gas (therefore activating the acc pump jets). Every press of the throttle kills mileage. I found that I get better milage at 85 than 65 too. Go figure.
|
I kept the throttle as constant and as "smooth" as possible. Most of the ride was through farm land and slightly rolling hills with the occasional slow down and stops in small towns along the way. The ambient temps were 85-90 and the engine temp never went over 210.

I take it Beth discourages "spirited" driving????
|
Mike,
No way, we did a little "spirited" driving too!!! |
As long as you folks don't name your cars "Walburga, Paula, Brunhilde" ect :) Prof. Porsche would like - Wiedekind says: "show me the money"

I get between 325 and 350 per tank with regualr driving.
|
I drove my stock 76 2.7 cis from Atlanta-Knoxville and back got right at 24. For most of the way the speedo set on 90 and I was moving out of the way of faster traffic constantly. As for spirited driving it is pretty much as often as I can and the fun warning, or perhaps "spitited driving warning," was active in the passenger seat.

What were you doing in Cinci? Did I see your car at the Oxford meet?
|
Doug,
We were indeed in Oxford! We were in the candy apple red '74 targa parked directly across the street from the Elms Hotel. Which car was yours? I wish we would have met! We had a great time and especially enjoyed the Steinkeller German restaurant. |
So this one is yours then?
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1122996541.jpg We were down the street aways (towards campus)...kinda in nowhere land. I wanted to park along your row, but when I got there a blue 993 was parked parallel to the street and I didn't think another car could park there. (he eventually moved, of course!) Here's our girl, a brown 1970 911T (we call her "Foxy Brown" :D ) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1122996679.jpg I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to say 'hey'. Next time for sure! SmileWavy |
Doug,
Thanks for the picture of our car! We saw your car and thought it was beautiful. I wish we could have met, but we're definitely going next year so let's meet and have a beer at Steinkeller! |
Cool!
I actually posted a thread asking if anybody was going to this...I got zero responses!!! I'll be sure to keep it on the front page next year for all to see. |
Just got back from a 550 mile trip in my '83 cab--top down the whole entire way. Completely stock car. Stayed at speeds between 65 and 85 mph. I got 22 mpg. Needless to say, I'm pretty happy with that.
