Anyone Have 2 Carrera Oil Coolers

Anyone running a Carrera oil cooler in each fender? I need to bring my oil temps down and adding a front cooler would require a new front bumper. Thinking of reomving the washer reservoir and adding a second Carrera cooler. What do you think?

John

Wow - really? I didn't have cooling issues with my car even running back to back sessions at Sebring when the on track temps were over 100 degrees. Sure everything is working up to snuff?

John,

Your 84 probably doesn't have the fan on the cooler and that could help quite a bit. I know my 85 doesn't have it and I am going to ad it. I think it became standard on the 86's. I would go that route as well as maybe figure out how to funnel the air to the existing cooler. Many threads on how to do that. That should be more than sufficient.

You might try other solutions that can be quite effective, such as ducting, a fan, finned oil lines, cleaning the engine mount cooler, removing fog light, etc. These can all lead to some good reductions in temp, especially when done together.

Twin Carrera coolers is doable, a search will provide some info:

Get air to it. I had a carrera cooler on my SC and it ran at 220-230 on really hot days. I put in a 44 row Mocal front cooler which is probably not as effective as the Carrera unit (smaller but fits better up front) and on similarly hot days I am running 200.

With the right air flow you don't need huge/multiple coolers.

Track days with air temp in mid 90's I reached 248D. I have the factory installed Carrera cooler, but it is the early one with just tubes and no fins or anything. I remove the fog light and have blocked off the bottom to funnell air in. I also added a fan, but that only helps when idling or in traffic. The only thing I think I could add would be a stoneguard to block a little in into the cooler.

Try a larger cooler.

I,ve installed a second cooler on the drivers side for a 3.6 conversion. Theres a very good thread by" surflvr" I think. It sounds like you have the 28 tube Euro/ROW cooler ,not the late Carrera cooler. I,d install a fan and then cut some holes in the back of my headlight bucket and remove the light for the track if air flow is really the problem.

87 was the first year for the auxiliary fan on the carrera oil cooler. Here in Tucson when temperatures approach 110 my oil temps approach 250 if I drive much in stop and go traffic with the AC on - so I don't. I just ordered an aftermarket fan and install kit from Elephant Racing for $170 complete with relay, wiring, fuse and thermoswitch that's adjustable from 170F to 210F. I'm thinking of using the 170 setting to set the fan to come on hopefully that's not too low.

They also have lots of oil coolers of all sizes and shapes.

You really don't have the Carrera cooler at all. That's the 28 tube brass oil cooler. A radiator type cooler with air flow will do better at the track.
