Passed CA Smog

Took my 911 to get smoged yesterday and it passed without any problems. Here are the results:

(15 mph) %CO2-3.53, %O2-3.53, HHC(ppm)-19, CO%-.12, NO-472

(25 mph) %CO2-3.51, %O2-3.51, HHC(ppm)-20, CO%-.10, NO-507

Car is 1976 2.7L no thermal reactors 25,000 miles on rebuild. How does this compare to your 911?

Hey dmarv, where did you get it tested, I live in the area, any recommendations. I need to put all the smog equipment back on my car before I can get it tested.

Carmad, I took it to Cecil's Garage in Woodlake. Close to my house. I've tried Visalia Auto Hause, but they know Porsche's too well and would not smog it because my thermal reactors were removed. In town, I would try Jenkins Automotive on Center Street. They will pretest to make sure it will pass before doing the actual test. Cecil's number is 564-8026. They have smog Porsches for Gardner Harris in the past, and seem somewhat familiar with them. Good luck!!! If you have any questions call me at work 592-2707. I'm here Monday through Friday 7:30am to 5:30pm and 8am to 2pm on Saturdays. I own an auto parts store, so if you ever need anything, let me know ( Sorry Wayne, not trying to steal business).

P.S. Make sure the engine is hot when you test, it really helps the emissions.

I'm trying to figure if I need the air pump and egr hooked up to pass?? I have SSIs and wonder if it'll pass the tailpipe side of the test (regardless of the visual).

Hmmmm... that I am not sure.

It really depends on the person doing the smog check.

I ask because the smog place near my house saw the car and said "since you have a 'no catalyst' sticker in the door jam, I don't care what kind of exhaust you have, it's n/a."

In other words, if I can get it to pass the tailpipe test I might be home free!!!

You can check if he is willing to test it, and if it pass just go ahead and send it to the DMV and if it is failing tellbhim not to send it in this way you do not have to see a referee.

My 86 with SSI's passes the tailpipe sniff test everytime. We haven't gone to the smog 2 testing yet with a rolling road though. The last time I had mine tested, I was worried it wasn't going to pass do to the gas cap test.

Scott (1yearonly), Hi, I THINK my air pump and EGR are atill connected, but the TR's are histroy. Where's this place that made the comment about the "no catalyst" sticker?

I never could get the name of the place local in Pasadena from my wrench, now I am looking for a place myself.

Scott,

My EGR and smog pump are hooked up. My car does have a "non-catalyst" sticker which helps with thermal reactor removal. Most tech's think thermal reactors are a cat, which they are not (according to Porsche). The first time I ever got a smog I took the car to the PO's mechanic. As soon as I rolled in he took one look at my car and said "I can't smog that car, there are no thermal reactors on it!" I took it to the shop next door that works mainly on Domestic car and he smogged it no problem. You need to have EGR and Smog Pump hooked up to pass.

dmarv - I kinda have the same questions as Scott. My car still DOES have the EGR and pump. My question: Does removing these AFTER smogging do anything (negative OR positive) to performance or driving characteristics? I would like to remove them (assuming it is not a major PITA) for appearence reasons and just reconnect every other year at "smog time". Sure, it's a hassle but I want the car to look right/please me. But if it screws with the mechanicals or is hard to do I could live without doing it. Anyone know?

My EGR won't fit with the SSIs so I need to either dummy-up the air pump to look like it's working and hope it passes or put the original exhaust (with 3:1 versus reactors) and play fair.

The tech at the smog place felt reactors were cats as well and that I didn't need them.

The 'no catalyst' sticker is in the drivers door jam...you can't miss it if you have one.

Dan,

You can remove your smog pump and EGR after the vehicle inspection even though it is "not legal" to do so. The only PIA problem would be plugging the air injection holes on the the head and EGR inlet on the muffler. This is assuming you want to remove the system completely. If you just want to clean up the engine I would remove the smog pump and bracket. Then use a rubber heater hose cap to cap the air check valve so moisture will not destroy the valve. I would leave the EGR intact because you really don't see it on a CIS car. The only performance gain from removing the two systems would be a slight (probably undetectable) increase in horsepower due to the smog pump not being turned by the engine.
