Help B& B headers
I have put a set B&B headers on my 3.6 conversion and am trying to sort a muffler. It was so loud but I think most of the noise might be because the headers aren't sealing to the motor. I didn't put gaskets in. Have I messed up. Please tell me I just need to tighten the nuts.........please

Why didn't you use gaskets? You need to start there.

I didn't remember seeing any when I removed the stock exhaust and there where none with the kit. So there definately should be gaskets?
Bit of a novice at all this thanks for your help. |
Sorry to say that you HAVE to put gaskets in! Absolutely imperative. I just installed B&B headers on my car and the kit comes with brand new gaskets.
This is the only way to properly seal the headers against the heads, otherwise you have all types of awful leaks, do not forget we are talking about a point of contact that undergoes a huge spectrum of heat expansion and cycle (and flow as well), and a gasket is the only way to provide a proper seal. See the groove where the gaskets seat?

Gaskets on both ends - where the headers meet the engine and where the headers meet the muffler.

One of my exhaust gaskets developed a small leak a few weeks ago and the car sounded like a Harley-Davidson at idle. Put on a new gasket, car sounds great again.
Your going to be very happy when you put your new gaskets in. |
Thanks everyone. I can't believe I didn't check before I put them on.

You describe yourself as a "bit of a novice" so I gotta give you credit for taking on the project.
Be careful taking off the exhaust bolts when you add the gaskets. Its very important that you don't break any of those bolts. Sounds like they came off the first time without a problem but if you can, spray them with BP Blaster a few days ahead of time to help insure they come off easy again. You want the rest of the project to go smoothly. I hope you don't mind me making this additional suggestion. Have fun. |
I appreciate the advice very much. The one thing I did do was apply anti sieze to the studs so should be ok. Made some inquires about gaskets at porsche and it sounds like it is a crush ring type rather than traditional style gasket as on 3.2. Looking at your diagram Bill the ring goes in that groove correct? I was imagining one that would have had holes for the studs and covered the whole surface of header flange. The old style $5 each new style $26 each. At least it's AU$. Thanks again.
