mine looks like this.
only one mounting point at the bottom. on my 75 car, you can see the welded nut on the inside of the trunk if you lifted up the carpet. ![]() i can drive by, if you want to take a look see.

mine sorta looks like that too, but I have an extra bracket near the bottom without anything attached to it. I'd post the pic I just took but my camera isn't talking to my computer (or vice versa). You're too far for me to drive by though

cliff,

I don't have tabs like that on my '72...the lines are held in place by metal brackets that curve to the shape of the lines and there's a bolt in the middle which screws into the body.

bob, camera and comp are speaking to each other again, so here's some pics of the bone and how it attaches. In the third pic you can almost make out the hole in the body between the tubes.

Bob, take plenty of photos and do a bit of a write up... Some of us have a vested interest!

jeff - the last pic is the "money shot" - thanks! i received approx 1/4" hard plastic washers that look like the would fit in between the body and hard line clamp/brackets. i suspect they are "dampeners".
question: in placing the hard oil line brackets, i count 3 under the rocker panel and the other two in each wheel well? or maybe the left over two (5 total) to be mated together as one in the rear wheel well on the lines from the thermostat to tank/engine? question: then there are the 2 clamps, both in the front wheel well? i know one for sure attaches to the "ribbed" part at the apex of the front wheel well. |

Rocker panel tabs
Bob, the two tabs hanging down from the rocker panel are for the gas heater exhaust pipe. Like on SWBSam's 911S. His tabs are black on the silver exhaust pipe.

Bob, Resurrecting an older thread here - hope you don't mind. A few questions.
I know you have a 2.7, why use a trombone? I am new to 911's, my car ('76) has NO cooler. What is the consensus of the board on the effectiveness of trombones? Gotta be better than NO cooler, huh? And cheaper too. I am kinda anal so I will want to power (or other) wash the wheel wells, apply new Wurth undercoat too. Did you just use the spray can type, or buy the Shutz (sic?) gun? Looks like you had the 'bone cad plated or coated in some way...what did you do? Mind if I ask the cost? Thanks for any advice, Dan P.S. Why is the hood masked in your pix? - Just nosy! ![]()

hey dan - trombone was marginally effective which is why i swapped it out for the 28 brass style last weekend. the trombone was just about the same as having no cooler. i know that people have mentioned that temps should drop by just adding the lines and basic cooler but that wasn't the case...for me.
i didn't use the gun...just the rattle can. i would buy 2 cans to use on the wheel wells and inside fenders. i sanded and polished the trombone - too much work but it looks good. ![]() cost as follows: used hard lines, thermostat, mounting hardware - $550 trombone - free thanks to shaun 84 targa 2 new oil lines from hard oil line to oil tank and engine - $175 kendall oil - $30 worth stone guard - $13.50 per can labor - free this job is time consuming but can be accomplished by one person in a weekend. my advice would be start off with at least a 28 brass style or save for the carerra style. in looking back on this thread i really have to thank all the pelicanheads for answering my questions - awesome people here. keep us posted! |

Thanks Bob, I trust your advice, sounds like I should do myself a favor and not bother with the trombone. My car has NO external cooler! Is it just me or is that cause for a feeling of "Yikes!"?
Wow, $800 and that's without the cost of the cooler itself. No wonder guys are trying to use Pep Boys automatic trans coolers and RX-7 coolers. Sorry for my lack of knowledge, but what do the 28 row brass cooler come from and how easily obtainable are they? I haven't yet looked extensively, but Carrera coolers - when I have encountered them, seem to go for like $1000...still would need most of this other stuff you mention too. What's the board's consensus on "the" place-to-buy?

i would check with the salvage yards for the entire set-up. if you buy used make sure the parts don't come from a blown engine to avoid metal particles within the cooler and lines. the thermostat has very soft threads so make sure that is solid. i like partsheaven and EASY for all parts used - mainly because they
not sure what years the 28 brass style were installed. they can be had for about $250 used. luckily i got mine from stephan wilkinson for free - again awsome people on this board! what temps are you seeing now? |

the going price for a t-bone cooler setup from motor to cooler, is $500 at partsheaven. at least that was what it was last year. with a carrera, i paid $950. (with fan).

Thanks guys.
Bob, I have barely driven my car- it's ben in the paint shop for a total redo since I bought it. The PO - my nephew, says it ran about 190-200 in the limited time he had it. It's not so much it is running hot as it seems to me to be the best insurance is to take care of your oil on an oil-cooled car. Guess I'd better keep my eyes peeled for a super deal. I'd probably be fine without, but will look for a full setup from SOMEWHERE right after I get it back from paint.
