I have an early car that I have made the decision to install the Carerra chain upgrade on v.s. rebulid the stock tensioner. After hours of reading I understand that its best to install the updated idler arms for the most security.
Is it possible to install the arms without screwing with the CAM timing? Currently I have the chain double wrapped in 2 spots to prevent even the slightest movement on the CAM. The tensioner and spacer will be easy at this point but what about changing the idler? Will I be asking for trouble? Thanks! Looks like this: Disaster averted - chain tensioner update

If you put a wrench on the cam and hold it while replacing the tensioner you should be fine. Before you remove the tensioner, be sure you have a feel for which way the cam is going to try to rotate when you remove the tensioner, this way you'll be ready for it.

As long as you keep the cam sprocket from skipping a tooth you can replace the idler arms.
