need help...car backfiring

I'm a new 911 owner and just bought the car a week ago. All the sudden it started idling weird and backfiring on acceleration. I hardly accelerate and it backfires. It's also having a hard time starting up. I did a search and came up with possible problems with the head studs or distributor. I need help! I'm probably going to take it in to get it looked at, but i want to know if there is anything i can do.

Thanks,

Jayson

Jayson,

Start looking for a vacuum leak. Is there anything that you did recently that might have left a hose disconnected? If it has a pop-off valve under the air filter, check that it is seated correctly.

did you put 89 octane into it? if you did, that's probably the problem.
i did this once and a can of octane booster fixed it right up.

Aside from the above, it could also be your warmup regulator (WUR) or a too lean mixture, especially if it is backfiring through the intake. If the backfire is out the exhaust, then the mixture is probably too rich.

Mine did that when the warmup regulator plug cracked due to age and fell of the WUR.

Check for air leaks too, maybe the pop off valve came loose..

found out it was the coil. I replaced it and now it runs awesome! So much smoother and fires right up! Thanks for the input though!
