Valve Gods please help!!

I was at Road Atlanta a few weeks ago for a two-day event and the first day the car ran fine. The second day I noticed that the car was missing at ideal but no power was lost. I did not miss a shift or over rev the engine. It was running fine so I thought it might be a fouled plug. When I got home I went over to a friends to work on our cars and I noticed a ticking – it is most noticeable between 3200 and 4500 RPM. The car is not smoking at all. What do you all think? Could it be just an adjustment or do you think I will need to do a top end? I am planning on bringing it to my wrench on Monday but I was hoping for some good news so I will be able to enjoy the weekend… Any thoughts?

May be an exhaust leak.

Have you adjusted your valves lately?

Generally speaking ticking noises are very rarely something serious.

Man you guys are quick!!

John - It has been about a year or so - I am hoping this is the case and not a bent valve. How is the transplant coming?

Kurt - I sure hope so! I have two events coming up in the next month and have very little money to put into it!

Thanks again for the quick responses

Find something better to worry about. Regardless of your inspection, my first guess is an exhaust leak. Or perhaps a misadjusted valve clearance. Ticking noises are nothing, if that's the whole complaint. Relax.

Transplant is slow, I have been working on the SC alot. I am waiting on Howie to put the LSD in the trans and get the time to help me with the swap. He is getting close on getting the Meridian shop finished. We may take it there to finish up or do it here. I want to put a plug in the harness so we can scan things, so I guess I will do everything all at once. Additionally, we are going to put new t-bars and suspension in the car at the same time, so there is much on the plate. Give me a ring sometime, I am going to try Barber in late August, but need new tires and the funds are a little low right now, we shall see.

Ron, my guess is perhaps just an old cap and rotor, or a fouled plug or something. If there was no over-rev, then the most I would do is look carefully at the springs and such, next time I performed a valve adjust. Ticking is pretty much what these engines do, unless the valves are adjusted just right. Or maybe a loose elephant's foot. Or maybe some wear in a valve guide. These days you have to be careful what you worry about. Too many good things to choose from. My two best guesses are exhaust leak, or misdjusted valve. (and if it''s too tight, then there would be akind of sputtering thing going on. A miss, is probably electrical. At least we always hope our misses are electric, if you know what I mean.
