Bieker Engineering

hello all, just wondering if anyone has had a bad experience with them... ( http://www.biekerengineering.com ) he said three weeks in and out and back on my car and we're going on the end of 5 weeks now and running out of summer up here in the north. just have been leaving him messages and getting nothing back at any time of the day. sent him the carbs and he said we could pay when we're done and back on the car....a sliver of me thinks bad of that idea, but i got praise about this guy earlier so lemme know what you all think.

Thanks,

Joe.

sorry for the bad experience. he was pretty prompt with mine. he sends some parts to LA for the gold plating. could be one of his suppliers holding him up. i guess you have his number...

seems to me i paid after the fact, also. i've had pretty good luck with him when i've had set-up questions, and he is usually pretty determined to solve your problems over the phone.

no complaints here.

good luck

I had a pair of carbs repaired by Harry last month. At the begining it sounded like it would only take a week or so. There were technical problems that had to be checked out, further delaying things. Just at the point when I was getting anxious, I called him and was given another week's estimate. So a week later, I called again and Harry was surprised to hear from me because he said he shipped them the week before! His terms were the same with me, he shipped them back to me before I paid. Trusting person.

You know, I am sure this fellow Harry is a wonderful carb guy, as I have read many positive things about him, but why won't a business owner return a customer's messages? It is at best, poor business practice.

Harry Beiker has been doing this stuff for a long time and has an impeccable reputation. Im not sure why your calls have not been returned, but Im sure there is a good reason.

Dad got his Solex's done for his 356SC and 912. Phu King Smithsonian quality work. Beautiful and very functional. He is doing Dad's heads for his 356 and it is taking some time. That must be the price of semi-retirement and a one man shop. Damn good work all the same.

a lot of the guys who do ultra quality work like to take their own sweet time doing it -- it's a personality thing

I'm usually just glad to find somebody I can trust...

Harry Bieker has been doing this since the fifties. He worked on Phil Hill's race cars. I don't think anyone can top him in his knowledge of the older cars. I am 68 and I have been involved in sports cars since the late fifties and I have never known anyone who is better than Harry. If you ever talk to him, ask him about the Fageol blown VW he used to drive. As for not being prompt with his work, you must be aware that his excellent reputation results in a great deal of work being sent to him. Being a great guy, he accepts it but, being as thorough as he is, it takes a lot of time. I would far rather have a well done job than a quickie with problems. As for his delay in responding, if he were prompt in answering every inquiry, the wait for work would really get out of hand. He has done my carbs and is now doing the heads and rods for my 356SC. He has had them for a very long time, but I am not complaining as I know the job will be 100%. Tom Lewis (Jubbie's father)

But there is nobody else that I would rather set up or work on my car when it needs it. Excellant driver and the most knowledgable mechanic I know. He's slow and very meticulous. You might get it late, but it will never be wrong. Galen works with a select few customers and it seems to be working out well for him. When you take your car to his shop, there will be only one person working on it. him.

That being said. I don't recommend him to most people because of the long turn around times and other bits of drama. YMMV.

Reminds of a restaurant - you can go to McDonald's (quick but crap) or go to a "slow food" type place - the prefectionist chef will take his own sweet time b/c he wants it perfect.

I had a grad. student once who was "slow and very meticulous" -- drove me crazy but I bit my tongue. Sure enough he saved a completely screwed up project that another grad. student had slapped together....

So there's a lesson -- you just figure out the speed/quality issue in advance -- & the guy shold tell you this -- then you plan around it.

I used to work for Galen years ago when Harry still worked out of the same Burbank shop (WERKS II) as Galen.

Yes these 2 can be slow. But the quality of the work is well worth the wait. That being said, if you need your parts or your car in a timely manner you better plan on getting a rental PORSCHE for a month or so, paossibly a year. LOL...
