valve adjust followed by strange odor

It shouldn't still smell after four days of driving (assuming that you get it up to full temp each time you drive). Have you checked the exhaust to see if there was any plastic stuck to it? One time I ran over a plastic supermarket bag while in my daily driver and the bag melted onto the exhaust pipe between the engine and the muffler. It stunk for a long time until I got fed up and scrapped it off while the pipe was hot.

Good point. I looked under there yesterday and didnt notice anything like a bag...but I will look again.

This is going to sound dumb, but look around in the engine compartment for any tools, etc, that may have have been forgotten by your mechanic. After I bought my '72 and drove it home 750 miles I found an old melted screwdriver between the engine crossbar and the tin. I dont know how long it had been there, but another ~4" and it would have been into my fan :eek:

Did the shop clean the underside of the engine? Degreaser leaves a lingering smaell that is sorta plastic-like.

Are you sure those are blue valve cover gaskets ... or blue silicone 'gasketmaker' sealant??? It shouldn't smell, even if dripped on the heat exchanger, though. Silicone sealant doesn't smell much, even when laying on headers! It chars and leaves a whitish, crumbly residue.

I'm sure the plastic source of the smell will eventually evaporate and go away ... even if you don't find it!

Well...Im glad none of you said something like too tight of valves = smell :) so there is probably another reason for it. I need to get under there and take another look.

Warren, it looked like they used light blue gaskets...Ill look again as it may be the sealer as you mentioned
