Oil Cooler Fan Not Working
Anyone got a diagram showing the complete circuit for the oil cooler fan in the front right fender for a 1987 930?

Fixed
I found the relay (third from the rear) that provides power to the fan. Interesting enough, the relay coil is switched on by the ignition key (power) and a thermostat at the oil cooler that when made allows the ground lead to energize the coil. I could not get to the thermostat last night so I jumped the plug (lavender brown leads) , lower right front fender, until I can get to the stat this weekend.

Cooler Fan Test......
Patton,
First, test the cooler fan. The fan has 2 wires (most likely red and brown). Apply 12 volts to the red wire (terminal 87). The fan should run at this point. If it doesn't, check the ground wire. The cooler thermostat acts as a grounding switch to activate the relay. Once the relay is switched, power is supplied to the fan. The power to the relay is supplied from the ignition switch. Hope this helps..... TD |

Maybe the newer cars have a different set up, but on mine it is much more simple. Ignition powers the relay, relay sends 12 volts to the + side of the fan, - side of the fan connects to the thermoswitch on the cooler and the thermoswitch is grounded. If the oil is hot enough, the thermoswitch completes the circuit to ground and the fan runs.

My thermostat is sticking in the rear fender well. I tried to get it out last Sunday but I could not get one of the lines that go to the front oil cooler off. I heard that if I apply heat to the fitting it may break loose. I certainly hope so. I will try again tonight when I get home.

patton, you are doing it the hard way. on both of my setups i have a backup switch to flip it on way before the thermoswitch. i just put a switch to connect terminal 85 to ground. why dont you ground 85 with a fused link and see if the fan turns on?
you know the thermoswitch flips the fan on at or above something like 220 right? you cant really hear it while driving, and you can really idle it up to that temp. dont be messing with the oil hoses just yet.
