How do I remove a broken Lug nut???
I'm trying to remove my front drivers side wheel and one of the lug nuts broke off leaving the base in place inside the fuch, still screwed in very tight. I've sprayed it with Rust Off, and have had no luck removing it. Anyone with a "bright" idea???

Some people have luck with a deep hole saw that fits over the shaft of the threaded stud.....spin it up and cut carefully.

Broken lug nut
Buy a hole saw, as deep as possible, but just bug enough to fit over the stud. The hole saw will cut the base of the lug nut and you will be able to remove the wheel and then with the wheel off you could then replace the stud.
In the future you should keep a coating of lube on the studs. |
Take a pair of calipers....I don't have my book in front of me....and measure the STUD....get a hole saw the size of the stud.....I'm assuming it's broken off all the way down toward the bottom up against the wheel?
Anyways, get a couple of them, and try to cut with the drill on reverse....the heat and the directional torque may break it loose. Hit the stud with PB Blaster or Kroil before....don't use WD-40 that stuff sucks.... Gud luk.... |
Just did one 2 weeks ago. 3/4" deep high quality hole saw. Remove the guide bit & saw carefully.

OH BTW.....IF there is any of the hex left....SOMETIMES an SAE 11/16th socket can be beaten on and will have enuff bite to crack it loose.

the remaining thin threaded shell is removed with a pencil sharp punch and hammer. the wheel won't come off until you remove the shell.

i purchased 4 brand new lugnuts and put my locking ones in a box. i didnt need the potential aggrevation.

I didn't have any luck moving it with a punch. When I got down to what is pictured above, I took off the rest of the lug nuts & the wheel popped off with that remainder still wedged in the wheel. The threads were drilled off by that time.

I've read about this happening a number of times so I am curious.
Do they typically get stuck and break because someone may have over-torqued the lug nut long ago? |
Mine was torqued correctly & only on for 2 months.

I had this happen when they ignored my request to use a torque wrench. The hard part is getting the leftover metal out of the threads. I finally snapped and beat the hell out of it till enough metal was removed and just took the whole hub to Rennsport here in Tulsa and had new lugs installed. Much faster and was not too expensive at all.

The hole saw worked like a charm. It took about 3 minutes. Popped right off. The bolt will have to be replaced though, I sort of dug into the threads a little.

I already know how to fix what just happened to me. I can't believe I didn't think of this myself. BTW: The nuts were new, lubed and installed by me with a torque wrench about 8 months ago. I just broke 1 out of 20 when removing the wheels today. Cheers! |
