Rescued/towed a stranded 911 yesterday...

One of the very rare times I was driving my wife's BMW X5 to Home Depot to get some supplies... I came across a broken-down 70's-era Targa stuck at a major intersection (first at the light). An older gentleman and his wife were waving people around themselves from inside the car.

I spun a quick U-turn and pulled up behind them and put on my flashers. I jumped out and pushed them to the side of the road to get them out of traffic (since there was no place to pull off, they were still in the traffic lanes, just out of the intersection). He seemed to think he was out of gas.

Luck would have it, about a decade ago I bought a nylon tow strap from JC Whitney with a metal hook on each end. It had been in the X5 trunk (under the floor next to the spare) for years. Of course, it was still there!

I pulled in front of the 911, hooked up the tow rope, and gingerly pulled him about 1/4 mile to a service station. No damage to either car (or person).

He tried to hand me money, but of course I couldn't take it.

When I drove by the gas station 45 minutes later, he was gone. Happy ending!

I was too worried about getting killed while standing in traffic to strike up much of a conversation! People zipped around us like we were traffic cones - with about as much respect.

He did tell me he just did a full re-build himself. That would easily qualify him.
