Make my own black chrome mirror?
 

I've been looking for months now for a large, rectangular style, 74-later, black, driver's side view mirror with no luck. They are discontinued, so I'm thinking: buy a new chrome one from Stoddards and disassemble it, take it to a rechromer and ask them to black chrome it. Think that would work? Or would you strip the chrome off and use some other finish? The factory finish wasn't black chrome (i believe) but what else can stand up to the abrasion in that ball socket where the mirror pivots? Won't paint wear off quickly? Any ideas greatly appreciated. Mike P
