73 rs rear cabin photo

Does anyone have photo(s) of the early Carrera RS rear cabin?

I'm trying to remember what they had for rear interior trim. I know the rear seats were deleted, but were the side and rear deck panels still there? Or was it lightweight carpet?

My '72 is shaping up to be more track- than street-oriented, but I want a slightly more finished look to the rear cabin than my last 911 (semi-flat black paint over steel). Ideas?

Tim,

I can't help you with a digital photo but you can find pictures in some of the Porsche books. The green Carrera RS book has one, as does Brian Long's book of the 71-77 911s. At any rate, the lightweight-spec cars had felt/carpet glued in the back on all surfaces. The early factory photos show the material to be fairly crudely installed. It wasn't trimmed all that accurately and the edges were not bound. Most of the reproduction carpet sets will have the bound edges. The trim piece below the rear quarter windows was omitted and the felt extended all the way up to the bottom of the window. For that matter, some of the cars had no upper trim on the door panels either. I am certain that there were variations in the production run, as Porsche wasn't always consistent on how the cars were built and individual owners often had their say as well. I have seen an un-restored 911R with all of the rear trim, except for the rear seats, in place, so who knows exactly how they left the factory. I drove a couple of the lightweight RS cars 25 years ago and I couldn't tell you from memory how they were finished. Do what you think looks good and make yourself happy.

Thanks, 'dog. That's a good mental picture and I'll try to find Long's book to check it out.
