stock 3.2 (84) exhaust options....with data
What are the proven chip and exhaust combinations for a stock motor with data to back up the claims. It seems as if there is alot of judging being done by the seat of the pants and how it sounds. What do dyno tests show?.
Can the system be too free? If a reduction in back pressure is the only factor, there would be many more options other than SSI's and GHL. Also, I don't have to have heat. What about a Fabspeed premufflar on stock heat exchangers with a Flowmaster like Jack Olsons? It would be simple and cheap. Or, Bursche headers w/same Flowmaster. The setup does not have to be pretty. I sounds like it would be good. Whats effective? Surely there are a couple of proven setups....both expensive and not expensive, WITH horsepower comparisons done on a dyno. Thanks James Last edited by jamesjedi; 08-03-2005 at 10:47 PM.. |

Dyno time you might have a problem getting. Those numbers are good but just a baseline. Everyone's car is so different that the whole package really determines how well the motor does in that particular car. I know Tyson loves his 3.2 with a Steve Wong chip and very trick exhaust that I will have to copy, that is if heat is a necessary on your build list. What are you trying to get from the motor, easy hp, decent hp, sound, fun factor, track, yada yada yada. Based on those answers you can move forward and not spend money willy nilly. I dont want to come across as a know it all but it just seems that ppl really love spending money on these cars and I'm trying to build my car on a measly budget while I am in school and have it come out badass. Basically I am doing it all myself, who cares.
I would go with 993 HE's a custom muffler to your sound level preference and a Steve W chip. Fun in the sun all day long. Ah I hate seeing my car on jackstands while it seems everyone else is driving theirs. cheers, ryder

go to Steve's website - www.911chips.com - lots of unfo there.
And the 993 exhaust - while a good exhaust - the flanges on the left side have to be cut - and rotated 90 degrees to fit the earlier cars.

It seems that Steve Wong has all the answers. I spent a great deal of time trying to find this information. All part of the fun!
Thanks to all who replied. James |

James,
Very tough to get hard scientific data on this subject. I did a bunch of research when I was in the same spot. I ended up replacing the cat witha Fabspeed Euro Pre-muffler, a Steve W chip, and adding a second outlet to a stock muffler. The only thing I'd change would be gutting some of the muffler before I added the second outlet. I'm very happy with the sound and what I feel is the performance gain and at 1/3 to 1/2 the price of the other options. John

Is there any dyno difefference between a Fabspeed and Dansk premuffler, besides price and the option of stainless? They seem like the "bang" for the buck.
As a a side note Steve Wong sent me this....that is excellent customer servfice! Hi James, No bother at all, and thanks for your interest. If heat is not a concern, the best bang for the buck would be a set of 1 5/8 headers, (1.5" i.d) such as the Bursch you mentioned or a set of European George headers mated with a good flowing dual out sport muffler, such as a Monty, or you could make your own. The freer the muffler, the greater the hp output with the headers. If you need heat, then the GHLs are the larger diameter headers, second would come the SSIs, with it's smaller diameter pipes. If you just want inexpensive while cost effective, certainly a premuffler mated with a sport type muffler such as the Flowmaster or similar will give similar gains. The difference over the other setups, is that the headers usually gain you about 5 more hp throughout the mid to top end. With any type of setup, I have chips to match whichever setup you choose. You cannot make an exhaust on the 911 too free. It's just if you make the header diameter too large, you loose exhaust velocity at lower rpm, which create more backpressure than with a proper diameter primaries which have greater velocity. Here's a link you may want to look at, though the information is dated, it can give you an idea of what exhaust mods can do. http://www.968turbo.de/chipFAQ.html Although it doesn't say, test #2 is done with a european premuffler in place of the cat. If you have any other questions, or if I can be of further assistance, feel free to ask me. Best regards, Steve Wong |
