...and don't forget, a lot of "little" cars had fun at RIR as well - except for the ultimate scare moments when somebody left the track on the outside of two and whipped up a huge dust cloud that would hang over the esses, reducing visibility to about zero!

Here's of shot of me in my 1st Porsche at Riverside. In '85, the PCA Parade speed event was held at Riverside. I was an auto-x hotshoe and this was my first time on a track. On my first lap, I missed the turn after the long straight but barely made it on my second lap to get a time. A learning experience that I remember to this day.

I dug back through the "Mulholland RSR" thread to find these pics of Riverside I posted ages back.

That's almost as good as the guy who was so far out of it we watched him walk right off the end of his motor home (he was on the roof) and land face down in the infield dirt. After his buddies, still on the roof, had a great laugh, a couple of them climbed down, picked up their fallen comrade, threw him through a side door on the coach, and went back up to where the Bud was. We never saw the guy that fell again, for all we know he died in there! Sorry, no pictures, regrettably, of this event...

The old track suffered a slow death after '88 ....

I bought my car in Feb. of '89 and went out to a club event (while the demo was going on) about 3 months later, May I think ......

Glad I took the picture........

Cheers

Hey, I don't see any 917 photos. My lingering memory of Riverside was Mark Donohue going through Turn 6 in the big car. My Dad said "Hey, watch this!" MD would hit the fast pedal at the same exit spot EVERY lap, and the rear would jump sideways about 6 inches, and the car would hook up and just be GONE. Donohue was both the most consistent and the most ballsy driver out there by a long shot. I watched pretty closely the rest of the race, and not even the other 917 drivers could pull this off! And of course Donohue ran away with the race.

Oh, and my other lingering memory was me, sideways through Turn 6 in my 912! I had wanted to do that since I was about 5 years old!!!!!! Talk about a dream fulfilled....

cheers

In Birmingham, Alabama we had at the state fairgrounds a little - I think 1/8th mile - short track that started out way back in the day as a motorcycle race track. Then it became a car track. Through the years most all the greats that came up through the NASCAR circuit raced there. It was the home track to Bobby Allison, Donnie Allison, the late Neil Bonnett, Red Farmer and later the late Davey Allison with his brother the late Clifford Allison. Many of the big names - Petty, Fireball Roberts, the Flock brothers, etc. - raced there through the years. But today it's all gone. The old grandstands have been bulldozed with the rest of the fairgrounds to make room for one of the mayor's pet projects... an Olympic training facility complete with natatorium and indoor golf driving range... and polo grounds. Never seen a bit of polo played in West Birmingham. But hey. it gives the city somewhere to throw a boat load of money. Did the opinions of the racers that still came out matter.... no. Even though it's not necessarily my kind of racing it will be missed.

Boy, I love those pictures. I grew up at that track watching all the races.. Even POC or PCA events and SCCA... Pete Zimmerman, Gary Lambert, my father Len Scott, Sam Wang, Jud Boyken (spelling), John Starky and many others... What a great facility.. Was there for the Crazy Ver Schupan crash just past start finish.... Many accidents in Turn 9, the dreaded esses (for those who screwed up the first one) and the downhill off camber left hander that messed with everyone (i forget the number)... Breaking into the Snack shops at night and getting free sodas at the ripe old age of 13 ooooppppsss. Forget I said that.

I wish I had the opportunity to race there. I was fortunate enough to go on a few ride alongs there... What a thrill... I would have to say Thunder hill would be the closest thing to it these days.
