air pump on 3.2 (left side engine bay)

Re: airpump on the left side engine bay.

Just wondering what the exact function of this piece of equipment was? My understanding is that it pumps air to mix into the exhaust to dilute the C02 for emissions standards.

My car is a ROW model and I am not in a situation where there are any emissions tests requirements.

Is there any downside to removing this unit?

Will it have any effect on the DME (I also have a SteveW chip)?

Simon

You are correct about the function of the emissions air pump. It simply dilutes the air in the exhaust. If you do not have to have it, take it off.

I had a 78 with an air pump that had gone bad. The PO had taken it apart, pulled out the broken parts and put it back on to meet the emissions inspections. It still passed smog every year, though just barely, and it ran great.

Simon, the '85 3.2 Carrera did not come with an air pump. I currently drive an '85 ROW Carrera. I believe what you are looking at is the heater blower. If it is on the opposite side of the motor from the air box, this is what it is. It has nothing to do with emissions. If I am correct, the last car to have an air pump was the early SC's.

There also were 3,2 versions with air-pump, I have seen Swedish and swiss versions with this equipment!
Just take it away and close the holes in the heads with M10x1 oil drain plugs or brake line plugs.

Then I stand corrected. Where does the air get pumped to? I know on the 2.7 and 3.0 motors, the heads have a port that the air gets pumped into. This is not the case on the 3.2 heads. Does it get pumped into the exhaust before the cat? My car has an O2 sensor bung right before the cat (or where it used to be).

Simon just out of curiousity, does the pump run off a belt or is it electric? Can you post a pic of the pump?

Mackpipes,

No digital camera. But it is the A/C compressor's "twin" on the other side at the front of the bay and runs off a belt off the fan like the compressor.

Wow, I just checked PET on the Euro model '85 3.2 and low and behold there's an air injection pump. It's for Swiss and Aus. market.

Although I cannot remember where it went on my 911SC, most air pumps on american cars pump the air into the exhaust manifold. the pump on my 78 was belt driven
