911 R hinge info sought

The subject got started over on the parts BBS and I've made some motions towards getting the R hinge made once again. The thing is, I don't know what I'm doing. I've never seen any and there are some details that I can't seem to nail down. Every time someone does this it apparently gets changed a little. The best way to reproduce these is to be as faithful to the original as practical. I have downloaded and submitted the plans that were on this board a while back. Those plans call for stainless steel and bolts for hinge pivots. I don't see bolts on the 911 R pics I've looked at. I see cotter pins through a hinge pin. Is the pin fixed or loose?

I'm asking for your opinions and any facts you may know to help guide the project. I have visited Ernie Willberg's site many times, so don't merely suggest that. Based on what I get out of this thread is what will be prototyped and hopefully within a week or two.

If GT has these in stock, why has no one pointed this out to Marco and the 9 or so others that are driving this project? I'm not doing this for the money. I hate selling things. Anyone who goes over on the parts side knows that by now. Bob, can you post a pic of the thing and give us your overall impression of it?

Milt the hinges are $195+ from GT and I think no one wants to pay. They are so simple they should not cost that much. Maybe a group buy through GT would be another option or maybe Pelican has a source.

the gt-racing hinges are $200/pr. i have examined others and i like the gt-racing versions best due to their craftmanship and finish. i'll see about taking a pic when i get home but i am on a short leash until i finish the masterbath makeover.

Man, I'm glad you have accurate typing fingers today.

Yeah, I looked at the GT site, the pic and the 195 price. Well, I may not be able to do much about that. There's a lotta work in that little sucker. Now, in aluminum, I might be able to come up with something for less. But, that's not the point, is it? The point is to return to the original design as much as possible and still be practical, i.e., if the original was titanium, based on what titanium Weber linkages go for, figure about 500/pr.

I'll wait until everyone has a chance to see this and have their say in the matter.

Zeke,

Someone posted a drawing of the īR hinges at the BBS.
I think I saved it to my home computer and will look for it later.

There is a set on eBay now for sale at $180. Nice pictures:

This has little to nothing to do with accuracy, but yet more on "marketing". I know your not doing this for $$$, but I just thought I'd give my input. I'd more readily pay $2-250 for nice Al than $500+ for Ti. Sure I, like most would love Ti but $500+ is a little high for a street car to just look cool.

Wasn't Thrown Hammer (Shawn) making some of these in the past? I thought he mentioned that to me at a car show last summer, yet haven't seen anything recently on this.

Milt, did you ever get the MB muffler to work with your MFI? I'm still playing some with restriction with little return. Or did you just go back to "sport" muffler?

Milt,

It would seem that not everyone voting on the material is voting on the pin methodology!

I voted for 1) Aluminum hinges with bolts and 2) loose bolts, primarily from an esthetic/technological standpoint ... while Ti bolts and nuts would be nice, AN bolts/screws in aluminum and aluminum nylock nuts are readily available from aircraft supply stores. Gold anodized finish on the hinges seems close enough to Ti from a distance as to be acceptable!

Let me address this so far....., Thrown Hammer (Shawn) is not gonna do this anymore. We have talked. Andy Boyle hasn't spoken up, so I guess he's not too crazy about making any more either.

The drawings mentioned are the ones I took out for quote, I'm just trying to get things right. Like, was there a backing plate, or no? The drawings don't have one, hence it won't be on the quote.

The eBay link doesn't work, just like yesterday and the day before. Don't bother linking eBay from Pelican anymore. It simply doesn't work for many of us. Anyway, if those are the ones from Spain, they look like junk to me. Read the parts thread.

Sorry about the poll format. Multiple choice polls are too complicated for forum readers, they don't see everything. But, you can vote for 1-4 and then 5 or 6 if you care to. Thanks for any help.

I did post here earlier today but the site went down & my post seems to have disappeared.

Milt - I've had 3 batches of these fabricated - each time I had 6 sets made.

I was lucky to have had access to one of the 911R prototypes - R#3 (you can see some of my pictures on Ernie Wilberg's site) - & managed to borrow an original hinge to copy. One thing that people need to realise is that the original hinges were pretty flimsy - they weren't meant to be subjected to the rigours of everyday use.

I wanted some hinges that functioned in the same way (ie allowed the engine lid to be 'flipped' over) but that were a little less crude - & I didn't want to pay Hank's (GT Racing) prices.

Bob Tilton negotiated with Hank about a package deal if ordering 2-3 sets of their hinges & was successful in obtaining a small discount - one set came to me. The idea was to come up with something that was superior to the originals & closer in quality to GT Racing's version at a lower price.

The first batch I had made were in 'raw' stainless steel (ie unpolished) using a stainless steel machine screw/nyloc nut as the pivot:

The next 2 batches I had fabricated were in mild steel (as were the originals) which I had Nickel-plated - again I used a machine screw (chrome-plated brass this time) as the pivot:

See also this previous thread:

For reference these are GT Racing's hinges:

Unfortunately the engineering shop that I used is not interested in making anymore but I am looking for another fabricator...

I've seen this website mentioned on this board before, could they be a possible option? Seems like a very cool concept IMHO.....

Well, this thread seemed to bomb. I have posted an update on the parts BBS where the interest is if anyone cares.
