where do I check Transmission fluid?
 

just bougth an 85 Targa w/ 91k...great condition...where do I check the Transmission fluid?...shifting gears has become a problem

You need to take out the fill plug in the side of the tranny. You should feel the top of the fluid with your pinky finger. OTOH, you may need to adjust your clutch cable/shiftlinkage. Worn shifter bushings will cause problems as well. You got's Wayne's book yet? If not, better get one in the mail soon.

If you mean fluid level? Put the car on jackstands, sitting level. On the driver's side of your car, the transaxle will reveal two plugs, one above the other. If I'm not mistaken, for your '85 "915" gearbox, it will take a 17mm hex socket (or 17mm allan wrench) to remove them. Remove the top one, the fill plug. Insert finger. Point finger downward a bit. If it gets wet, you have transmission fluid. Once you've gone through this work, you may as well drain & refill your transmission. If you do a search here, you'll find a lengthy thread, or several lengthy threads, discussing the best fluid to use, how to change the fluid, etc. Inspect the drain plug carefully, it is magnetic. A little "fuzz" is okay, chunks of metal indicate that you may have a big problem. Oh...almost forgot the most important part. Be sure to remove the fill plug before removing the drain plug. Ignoring this advice can result in a transmission with no fluid if you can't get the fill plug out. This has happened to a few unfortunate souls who post here...;)
