Shelby’s Secret Weapon
- Shelby Toyota 200GT - In it’s first year of US racing, this Shelby-developed Toyota 2000GT nearly won the championship. But Toyota deemed the project a failure and canned it. This is its remarkable story. Guess it is not so crap after all.......dang (now all I need is 150.000;-) http://www.motorbase.com/article/by-id/1441185711/ SvK

Toyota launched a completely new line-up of cars at the 1965 Tokyo Motorshow. Two of them were sports cars, the small 790cc Sport 800 and the 2 litre 2000GT. The 2000GT was the first all Japanese cars to really challenge the European sports cars, on both looks and ride quality.
The engine was derived from the Crown saloon and extensively modified by Yamaha to produce 150bhp. The straight six engine was fitted in an X-backbone type chassis which was very similar to a Lotus Elan chassis. Other features included a cross-ratio 5-speed transmission, limited slip differential, and Japan's first 4-wheel disc brakes with vacuum booster. In October 1966 the 2000GT proved its class in an endurance run of 78 hours. In those 78 hours the 2000GT broke 13 international records and 3 world records in the 1500 - 2000 cc class, the 72 hours record (with an average of 206.02 km/h), the 15,000 miles record (with an average of 206.04 km/h) and the 10,000 miles record (with an average of 206.18 km/h). Although the 2000GT was a class act it wasn't a sales success because of its rather high price compared to the European sports cars. With only 351 built it is a very rare sight and quite valuable. WM

I saw one once in Sacramento, 1968 or 69 at a car show. Looked promising, don't know why Toyota didn't follow thru. Oh well, they would have had their butts kicked anyway when Datsun unleashed their 240Z!

I've always wanted one and still have yet to see one. Amazing they canned it due to the development that went into it. Giving Shelby a chance to race it and seeing it's outcome seems to me enough to confirm it's ability and the styling it beautiful.

The 2000GT is "the" most sought after Japanese car in the world currently and is high up on the collector car market globally -period. I have seen a few come up for sale on Yahoo! Japan auction and they average between $150,000 and $200,000US
They are incredible pieces of machinery, simply breathtaking. The heads were designed by Yamaha and the suspension is full IRS front and rear and way ahead of their time. 150hp stock froma straight six 2L but ringing 225+hp out of them is very attainable. Every year at the TORC meeting in Cali, there ia about 4-5 that appear, they are bassically removed from glass bottles where they are preserved and live a very pampered life. I would be honored to have one in my garage. Who gives a rat's ass, that its not a Porsche....shessh! Yasin

The one used in the Bond movie was a one off convertible. The requisite Porsche content would be that Shelby unsuccessfully ran a team that raced them against Porsches in SCCA competition.

Who gives a r/a? Those of us who know there are a thousand fora out there where you can chat to your heart's content about Toyotas and XKEs, 240Zs and Saab 93s. You're wasting our time.

I didn't read the dog thread, but I should think that how big a dog comfortably fits into a 911, and what people have discovered about accommodating them, would be of far more practical use to 911 owners than information on an extremely rare Toyota.
