Hi

I am halfway through the windshield replacement on my 79 SC

I have the old windshield out, the channel all cleaned up, the little bit of surface rust treated, the new seal on the glass, now here it the trouble,

(1) I cant seem to get the chrome trim to go on, the seal is so soft and pliable that it keeps jumping out of the groove if you even look at it to hard...

(2) I have tried to install the windshield back in the car several times using the rope method with no luck, it looks like if I really push down on the windshield the seal will not fill the grove and cover up the channel on the outside,

I am afraid to put alot of pressure on the windshield due to breaking it, this is my first time on this project any pointers would help,

I plan on calling it a day/night and starting fresh in the morning

Todd, seal goes around windshield, then trim gets installed. Then use the rope method. I've done a couple with no problem... Good Luck! Lou

This is such an oft-discussed subject that I'msure you can do some searches and get good info.

Re. the trim, the cruical thing is that the trim strip has to be the exact shape that it will take when it's in its groove. Exact. You will never be able to install a trim strip in the groove if it's a bit bent or wonky, and this is true in every dimension--i.e. in 3D. Lay the strip over the glass-plus-seal and work it work it work it with your thumbs, into the shape it'll finally take, then try installing it in the seal. It will "jump out" very easily if it's the wrong shape and will keep jumping out forever.

Using the rope trick is, of course, a two-person procedure. I don't think it can be done solo. And yes, you can push down on the windshield quite hard--this is why it's a two-person deal, one person ropes, the other spends all of his effort pushing--as long as you spread the effort over the glass as broadly as possible. The windshield will not pop into place simply because you pull the rope. Also, put a whole lot of dishwashing-soap liquid into and onto the seal and rope...
