Help w/87 oil cooler fan
When I bought my 87 Carrera the oil cooling fan was always on whenever the key was on. To remedy that I simply removed the relay and put it back in on hotter days.
I recently re-installed it and - no fan. Purchased a new relay from our sponsor, still no fan. Need help diagnosing this problem. Any suggestions where to look? Thanks! B. Darnell

Check your wiring especially the grounds. Also could be a problem with the temperature sender in the oil cooler, especially since you had the constant running before. Are you sure that you are getting oil flow to the cooler?

The temp sensor takes pin 85 on the relay to ground to energize it and turn on the fan. I added my dash fan control switch by running a small wire to pin 85, and the second wire of the switch to the chassis. (essentially a switch wired in parallel to the temp sensor) So if you pull the relay out a little bit and short 85 to ground, it should click and the fan should come on. I'm thinking that your old temperature switch must have been shorted (stuck on) but now it's not. You could also test the resistance between the socket hole for pin 85 and ground with an ohmmeter to determine whether the temp switch is open or closed (close to zero ohms resistance would mean it's closed)
If you determine that this isn't the problem, then if you haven't already, double check the fuses. Next step would be to check the wiring harness connectors over on the fan, short the relay and make sure power is actually getting to the fan with your volt meter. If it is, then your fan motor is probably shot, and you can take it apart and try to repair it, or put in a new one. be careful - If you have it shorted on and you're in there banging around near the fan motor, it might just take off. watch those fingers!!! good luck! ell BTW - I've found large chunks of gravel stuck in the fan housing. It's possible you just have a rock stuck between a blade and the housing. and hopefully it has popped a fuse and not burned up your fan motor!

I am getting flow to the cooler. Just the fan isn't working. Am going to check all fuses and other suggestions. Will let everyone know how it goes. Thanks.

I know the relay is good but haven't yet checked pin85 to ground. Is there a fuse I'm perhaps missing?
If the fan is now operating correctly (i.e., not on all the time) then great but I'd like to be sure. Thanks, B. Darnell
