915 Rebuild, part 1

Several weeks ago, second gear decided to take a vacation. So wtih the motor/trans out, today was a fine day for tearing into it to see just how bad it could be. and it was. Armed with a Mountain Dew at Chris Bennet's, joined by Janus Cole, and new guys Todd (86 Turbo) and Tim (a nice 73 roller he recently got for free and plugged a 2.2 into), I dismantled while Chris inspected, but even I could see that it wasn't good. And thanks to Randy for all your help and support, and clearly having the best documented trans rebuild thread possible!

Fast forward to the pic below, I need a another 1st/2nd operating sleeve hub. If anyone has one in decent used shape, *please* email me at shaun@g9girl.com.

Here's what we started with, garden variety 84 915 with 103K miles on it.

Pulling off the rear and center housings, it starts to get interesting. What is that thing sticking out from 2nd and 3rd? :(

A little better shot. Sorry it's blurry, motor skills were back-burnered on disovery.

Shafts on the bench ready to be dismantled.

Given all the metal debris in the first two housings, we pulled apart the ring and pinion. Gotta say, this was fun!

Fun with hydraulics. the closest I'll ever come to a G50 I think.

Where we left everything for the night, just need to find that hub!

Group shot of the day, Tim, Todd and Janus. All great guys.

Wow, Shaun! Serious deja vu going on here. :)

Figured I post a pic of what I was talking about today in my e-mail, too. This was part of second gear...

Also, looking at your pic above, it looks like the teeth on your slider are pretty much trashed. You've got one of those on order, I assume?

Maybe there should have been a factory recall on these slider hubs Randy. :) Or maybe they were made to do that. yeah, that's it. Let's put together a class action against the 915. :D

I am verrrry lucky to be getting help from my friends on the rebuild. Lots of good used parts are being thrown in for good karma. Otto's in Venice came through with a good hub today. We should have it back together this weekend depending on clutch and flywheel stuff.

do you think I should have my flywheel resurfaced?

Hey Shaun,

did you notice in that last pic Janus and I are slowly backing up as Todd is about to jump start Janus' car?

Interesting post, Shaun !

Would love to be around when a trans is taken apart. Eager to learn what everything inside looks like and how it works.

But.. perhaps I should be careful what I wish for. My own 915 could be next..:)

Markus, with the right tools, the right friends and all info here on Pelican, a 915 rebuild can be done by anyone.

I just got the slider hub today from Otto's, so we may get this back together this weekend. Will post part 2.

Tim, any update on your car?

Shaun,

I just home from work today and my new plugs and wires showed up. I wanted to order a cap, rotor and points but since you mentioned to me that I have a Marelli distributor they are NLA.

So the next time Chris invites us over to his house we're gonna check and clean all wiring we can find in the ignition circuit and get it running again.

I'll keep you posted,

Tim G.
