915 shifter action
Hi,
after I recently re-installed the engine, I started thinking about the shifter action of the shifter (can't remember how it was before engine removal). My shifter does not have any spring load that would center the shifter to the 3rd/4th gear plane. The shifter can be freely moved from left to right. However, to enter the 5th/reverse gear plane, I have to overcome the spring action that moves the shifter out of that plane. Is this as it was designed or should there be any spring load that keeps the shifter in the 3rd/4th gear plane for the forward gears? Thanks, Manfred

No spring centering was installed from the factory.
Many aftermarket kits are available.

Hi Pete,
thanks! At least I know now that the shifter is working properly. - Manfred

spring or not for 5th
Can someone clarify,
After redoing the shifter bushings and coupler, I need to push against a spring in order to get the trans into 5th gear. Is this right? Of course I have to push through the spring lockout for reverse.

For 5th and reverse, that is correct. Reverse should trip the lockout if adjusted correctly (so you can't go directly to R from 5).
