How many Guards Red Carreras in 75?

Who knows this one? I've seen sites for other years that detail how many of each factory color were produced. If you know or have a site to share I'd appreciate it greatly.

I haven't found one either. I started by researching the color code for my year. Take a look at this site. Enter your year and make and volia you can get your codes. Production information is more difficult it seems... http://www.paintscratch.com/

Gotcha! L027 is Indischrot (India Red), commonly referred to (incorrectly) as Guards Red.

From "Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera The Last of the Evolution" by Tony Cortlett, page 146:

"Despite many owners believing that they have a Guards Red car, the 3.2 Carrera was never painted in Guards Red. The color name is actually India Red (Code 027) later changed to Indian Red (code 80K)."

And from Peter Morgan's "Original 911", it lists Guards Red as "Indischrot, 027", page 66. This is for the 2.7 cars.

I also found that Indischrot (India Red L027) was first offered on the 1974 model year.

My car is a 75 Carrera, (2.7 from the factory). Adding my 3.2 motor doesn't alter my paint color (only the color in my cheeks). Sites like the www.paintscratch.com above show colors and codes for cars by year. I've noticed the color code identifed as Guards Red changes every year. For 75 it's coded as L027. You have a piece of information here I've not seen but it doesn't really change anything I don't think. The color was sold as Guards Red, paint shops refer to it as Guards Red, Porsche brochures and color charts show it as Guards Red and bunches of owners have their cars identified as Guards Red. I suppose it is not unlikely the color code change (year by year) does derive from another base color of another name (maybe German?). In the US we do sometimes alter titles for simplicity and understanding. You may be looking at an original German word "Indischrot" we know as Guards Red. I'm not sure.

I do apprectate learning new details and history about the breed. It's interesting but beyond that I'll stick with the color name used by dealers, owners, paint shops and color code sites . I don't doubt your information, Dave, but maybe your translation of the facts is splitting hairs? If there's more you can add to how Guards Red had become common I'd be fasinated.
Thanks!

I have no idea how Indischrot, which is German for India Red, came to be known as Guards Red. I've read in many other places where Guards Red is not the official color name but never have I found an explanation. At any rate, the color we refer to as Guards Red L027 does in fact have an official name of Indischrot (India Red) and it first appeared on the 2.7 cars in 1974.

I'm not against calling it Guards Red since everybody else does. I just enjoy this little piece of trivia.

I enjoy the trivia too, Dave. I've never heard this color info before. Now I'm curious as to how the color got it's name? I also wonder if there are sources for how many of each color they produced from the factory? That would be really interesting. I'm always looking for tidbits to add to the history and uniqueness to my sweet baby.
We're headed up to Steamboat this week and spending some artist time in Rock Mountain National Park. I've painted up there sevaral times and get downright enchanted every time.

Paintscratch dot com has many, many errors on its' site, and atttributing later paint code names to car years before the correct usage is just one ...

The '027' paint code did not change shades or formulations over the years ... and, 'L' is not part of the code, just a supplier, Lesonal. There were no '70s cars painted Guards Red, just India or Indian Red! Apparently, the marketeers decided to call the shade Guards Red for the 1981 models, thus '027' became Guards Red in the factory service manual for the 1981 SCs!

The time sequence for paint code '027' was, per factory service manual:

1974 - 75 ... India Red

1976 - 77 ... Indian Red

1978 - 80 ... India Red

1981 - 83 ... Guards Red

Excellent information Warren, what's your source? It sounds like the name for the 027 code was India Red and then later (81) changed to be called Guards Red. Guards Red and India Red are actually the same color though, right?
This is great stuff!
