Gearbox Whine

I have quite a noisy whine from my gearbox that seems to be in all gears but mainly noticable when crusing in higher gears, any idea what can cause this and is it easy to fix? as I have my gearbox out for my 3.2 conversion thought it may be a good time to address this issue. Was thinking maybe the input shaft bearing or diff bearings? Whats the cost involved and technical skills required to overhaul the tranny?

I believe that is a sign of worn needle bearings. I would change the trany oil first, and see if it goes away.

I think you may find that your intermediate plate bearing is worn.

I have just been examaning my gear box and noticed if I hold the input shaft I can feel A small amount of play by moving the shaft side to side, im taking it this isnt normal? if the input shaft bearings are shot how hard is it to replace them and will I need any special tools?

Following a lack of info on overhauling my gearbox and not having all the tools to hand as well as the fact im getting my new 3.2 engine on sunday and dont want anything holding me up with fitting it I decided to take my gearbox to a shop to get it sorted. I have just spoke to the guy at the shop who says he as stripped my box and there is nothing wrong with it and its all in pretty good shape. Apparently the end of the input shaft on the early 915 boxes dont have a bearing and always have a small amount of end lift. I presume the pilot bearing in the fly wheel stabalizes this? He is going to replace the two main shaft bearings anyway but he didnt think my old ones where bad enough to cause my whine. When I dropped the oil from this box it was pretty manky even though I had just topped it up with two litres of new, is it possible for bad oil to cause gearbox whine?

Steve
