Rinspeed history website: A blast from the '80s "Miami Vice" past!

Hi All,

With the recent R&T comparo with the RUF Yellowbird 911, I was looking at the websites of all the Porsche tuners to learn more about them. I came across this Rinspeed (thinking it was Rennspeed) site with some of the Porsches they had "massaged" in the past and my eyes popped out!

Here's a 911 blended up with a 928:

How about a 911, 924, and a Testarossa all in one car!

More of their 80s vintage cars (some of which don't look that bad):

"In 1993 the work with Porsche products was scaled back" Thank God! To think, people paid BIG money back then to make their cars look like this. Slant-nose 911s I can tolerate, but these are over the top. Here's their current lineup of truly weird cars:

Comments?

I still have a little bit of the '80s left in me. I still like the Turbo Cab look, even the slantnose. Then again I still wear my Members Only jacket (kidding).

But I never understood the motivation to make a Porshe look like a Ferrari. Take one great car and make it look like a different great car, and end up with neither?

I have never stopped loving the slantnose. I guess seeing the 935's race at Riverside and on ESPN in the late 70's and 80's keeps them alive in my heart.

I don't know either why anyone would take a Porsche and try to make it look like a Ferrari and end up with nothing.

eventually, these cars will be history, and worth the big bucks as people try to re-live the 80's.

it'd be kinda cool to have a museum with a few examples of these...

Many on that site are fascinating. One is a Porsche/Monte Carlo called the "Bedouin". It has a truck style bed put on the back of a 911 with an innovative folding roof/bed. According to the text, "it is a little reminiscent of the Porsche 911, type 996, from which it takes the 4x4 platform."

I kinda like the Presto. It it REALLY is a 2+2. Maybe it's a 2-2 (2 minus 2).

edit: added quote.

Yeah, I often wonder if the factory slantnose cars will be the Plymouth Superbird of the 2010s. Cars with outrageous styling at the time which look dated but "retro-cool". Right now factory slantnose cars sell for equal to (or maybe less than?) a comparable bug-eye car, and they are ultra-rare!

They probably cut up SWB S's to make those.

Slantnose is one thing, but most of those are something very different. For example remember the Gemballa Avalanche - it may have a slantnose, but would be just as hideous with a standard bugeye front end. I like the "normal" slantnose cars.
