Ignition key gets stuck!!!!!!!

First, let me say that I've done a search and after 15 minutes or so and various headings, I found nothing so if this is a rerun, sorry!!!

Very frustrated!!! The ignition key get s stuck from time to time a does not allow the starter to engage. This seems to happen more when the ambient temperature is hot. I've removed the entire Assembly and sent it to be repaired only to have the problem return.

Is there anything I can do to fix this problem? I was thinking of a remote starter, similar to those fancy cars but I wouldn't know where to begin. I did see a post on a push button started but the wiring was for a Miata.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Are you sure it is not a starter problem?

RAM 08-23-2005 02:16 PM

I'm sure it's not the starter because once I am able to go past the point where it usually sticks the starter kicks in. If I could describe the turning of the key, it gets stuck at the point where the "spring-back" kicks in. So, when you move the key clockwise to start the car, the key springs back to the on position. This is the key position where all electrical is turned on. The start mode is past this point and it's in between these points where the key gets stuck.

I hope I described that well.

Someone 'repaired' your ignition switch? Sounds like they didn't do a very good job... I'd try a new one if I were you...

I agree! The repair was not too successful. I would really like to avoid buying an entire tumbler as they are expensive. Any ideas?

Is it a lubrication issue? My key used to get stuck occasionally when I tried to take it out of the switch, but I lubricated it and it has been fine since...

Does it do it with more than one key, I had the same problem and thought it was my ignition, but it turned out the key was cut poorly.

Does turning the steering wheel while turning the key have any effect?

Occasionally I have a hard time turning the key until I turn the wheel just a bit.
Part of the interlock system.

what year are we talking about?

Assuming that there is no change if the steering wheel is in a different position, I would start with the easiest and simplest solution: get some graphite in there and turn it on and off a dozen times to work it in. If there is no change then start with all the other stuff.

Personally, I would not use graphite as it tends to gunk up over time. I have been using Triflow lube on my old, tired locks and they seem to function like new.

Thanks for all the responses. We are talking about a 1975 911S. I have tried to lube and tried to work it in but even then, I still have the same issue. This happens to both keys and moving the steering wheel while trying to turn does not help.

Anyone? Bueler? Anyone?

Funny I was going to post the exact same question after a lot of searching too. My key stops in the on position and will not go to the start position I have to take the key out put it back in ect ect a couple times then it'll turn once or twice. And since I have carbs it takes SEVERAL ignition attempts to get the car started without this issue. Problem just popped out of nowhere this week.

RAM 08-24-2005 10:32 AM

Sounds like the same problem. A replacement ignition switch is $400+ and I would rather spend the $ on an SSI exhaust (on sale now at PP).

I have to do the same thing, turn and remove key multiple times before it will start. Once I have in the start position it's not a problem. Its getting it past the "on" position that's the issue. I was hoping someone would say that all I needed to do is re move some pin or something. Wishful thinking I guess.

Take the assy out again, and separate the ignition portion from the tumbler. Take the tumbler and your key to a qualified locksmith and have him fix it. Around $40.

Nine9six,

Thank you for the instruction. I'll do this, this weekend and try to take photos to post later for others who are having the same problem. I hope this works.

Nine9six 08-25-2005 10:20 AM

RAM,
Before you take to the locksmith, check your key in the assy to see if it operates smoothly, or still gets stuck. If it gets stuck, then the one portion needs to see a locksmith for work. If not, then your issue is elsewhere...Perhaps in the ignition portion of the assy.
If you turn the key and the car starts intermittently, its the ignition portion, but as I understand your post, your key gets stuck, which is the lock/tumbler portion.

Good info. I'll post the results. I will say that I'm leaning more toward the remote start button. Does anyone have any wiring instructions for a 1975 911S? I've searched the forum but have yet to find anything that I can understand. I know, I know.....that's a personal problem.

Seconding the recommendation to try some lubrication. My ign cylinder was declared bad maybe 10 year ago, maybe more. Key would stick at various angles of rotation. Tried some bike cable oil (thick like honey). A few drops on the key tip, insert/remove a few times, add more drops repeat. Works smooth as silk. Repeat every other year or so -- say when you lube your distributor. Wipe the key clean of oil after oiling, and for a few uses thereafter, to avoid oil on clothing.
