Shocks and Identifying which type I have?
So how do I tell if my shocks are Bielstien (i can never spell that) Koni, Boge etc...
My Shocks are Yellow???? I want to go for the Bielstien sport shocks all around as everyone seems to think that they are the best ones. Sorry in advance if this sounds like a dumb question. SmileWavy |
Hup to the top for KDynoSoar because I need to know how to ident. mine too!

If yellow I would think you have Bilstein, but try to clean of the mud on the cover - there is usually a stamped brand name or number.
|
Yellow = koni
Green = bilstein Black = boge However, you could have boge housings with green bilstein struts inside. Only way to know is to take them off and look. If the struts have never been taken off and are black, then they are most probably just Boge struts inside. |
Kurt V,
I know Bilstein usually are green, but I recently changed and my new Bilstein are yellow. Is it a Euro thing or... |
Thanks for the responses chaps.
I have read that you have inserts for different shocks. What on eath do they mean inserts?? A shock is just a shock right? You buy it as one unit? So the colour and hopefully some sort of identifyer should be able to sort which type of shock I have? |
A shock on the back end is just a shock bolted on to the banana arm and the rear mount, but on the front the shock is 'inserted' into the front suspension assembly. When it is worn out it has to be removed and a new one re-inserted.
|
P.S I just took off my old Bilsteins--- which were yellow, the new ones were green.
|
Bilstein Sport shocks will be yellow. Bilstein Heavy Duty ones are green. Strut colors are as Kurt mentions.

I am gonna be really pleased if I have Sports on my car as they don't need replacing.. yet. :) So lost.. better look at the bentley aswell. How can I identify the insert types??? |
For my '87 Carrera:
Rear - Green = Bilstein HD Yellow = Bilstein Sports (Firmer than HD) Don't have any experience with Konis, check for a stamped manufacturer on the shock housing. Front - Black with black inserts = Boge (puny, skinny, weak) Black with Green inserts = Bilstein (MUCH nicer!) A lot of Pelicans run HD in the front and Sports in the rear. I just dropped in the Bilstein HD in the front, PO did HD rear, I plan on swapping the rears for Sports someday :) Hope this helps! (clear as mud?) -Chris |
I have not put my Bilsteins on yet, but here ya go. I have Boge struts, and ordered SPORTS for front and rear, so:
P36-0115 (Green) Front B46-0975 (yellow) Rear I have a 88 911 Cab Jason |
I've also seen orange/red Konis.
|
I am sorry to bring this tread up again, but I was under my car looking at my flapper boxes the other day and noticed that the rear shocks on my car are blue. Any one out there have any idea what I might be looking at?!?
|
Great, Pål !
We have green, yellow, red - naturally yours should be blue. Interesting. Any stamps or markings on it ? Can you shoot a pic for us ? Whats up front ? And how do you find our extreme summer heat ? |
I will have to try and take some pics tonight or tomorrow. I have not had a close look for markings, but again will try to have a look when I take the pics. The summer heat would be better if I was relaxing on holiday with a beer instead of siting in the office looking at the nice weather :(

As long as your office has a working A/C you are probably better of inside. Its too damn hot outside and the beach is the only tolerable place. But with 4+2 kids aged 15 months to 12 years it sure is no lying around relaxing. :D
