2.7 to 2.7 upgrade...

Just when I thought my '75 2.7 was going to put Bruce Anderson to shame...(over 200K & still pulls...) it had to go & start running hotter & playing "puff, the magic dragon" on start ups, cold & warm....soooooo, if I open it up for new guides, I KNOW I'll get a really bad case (no pun) of the "whileyou'reatits"....& start playing around with everything else. I just can't do that right now. I'm 35% of the way into building a new kitchen for my beloved & she will NOT be happy if I stop doing that & start playing with "that car"....I think you get the picture.

Soooooo, along comes a fellow Pelicanite that has put a 3.0 in his '77 coupe & had a still rockin' 2.7 sitting politely (not leaking) in the corner of his garage. We came to terms, Pelican to Pelican, always honorable....& this "new" 2.7, with the best (R7) case & the "good" heads & only 110 k, plus the Carrera tensionors & '74 heat exchangers....will find a new home in an old car!!! Now I can get it done in a wknd & NOT be a louse of a spouse.

Thank You Chris....for helpin' me out of a jam.........

You were lucky to get 200K out of your old engine. Congtrats. Now, you might sell or part out the old one & put the money toward something else, like a future 3.0.

Is it a longblock or complete? The swap could easily be done in a weekend. First drop the engine and transmission. then separate them. Move clutch and possibly flywheel to new engine. Use new stretch bolts for flywheel. Swap over engine tin, mounts, fan, shroud injection etc to new engine if needed. Fit clutch. align and combine new engine and tranny. Install back in car. REconnect wiring, oil and fuel lines. Fill with oil. Prime oil by hand. Then by starter. then connect igintion and fire it up. go for a short drive. Come back look for leaks. enjoy!

Best of luck.

Marv. 3.0...3.0 ???? EVERYBODY wants to upgrade to a 3.0 !!! Me, I'm a gluttin for punishment...I root for the underdog...I drove 912's & 914's & even a 912 E !!!! (I DO draw the line at waterpumpers though, a man HAS to know when a cause is hopeless...) So it's easy to see that I would try to keep this 'ol Targa going with a 2.7....

Jamie. It was about half way between a "complete" & a "long block"...has flywheel/p-plate/T.O. (not that crybaby Eagle/49er), CIS less cold start & fuel dist., has dizzy & Nology's, no tin , no fan/alt. but does have the "E" (green) shroud...& , as I stated above..."early" heatexchangers (1974 style)...oh !...did I forget to mention those priceless mag. lower valve covers ???? (I've got "turbo's" on my '75 2.7...) I agree, it is a wknd do....but it will have to wait for a wee bit. I've got a few more things to finish for my wife before I can feel good @ taking a "car" wknd......now, let's see...how do you "disconnect the ground" on a battery ????

Don't waste your time with a 3.0. Don't get me wrong the 3.0 is a great engine but if you were ever to upgrade then upgrade. A 3.6 with newer electronics, fuel injection, etc, and oh yeah alot more power. My 2.7 had 150k on her before she started sending smoke signals. I hated to change it out but after the upgrade you would lose that sentimental feeling instantly.

Rouxzy....I don't think I'm grown up enough to drive a 2400 lb. car with a 3.6 in it !!!! I do dumb enough things with a 2.7 pushing me along...a 3.6 ???? WOW ! I bet you pull G's with it........
