Oil warning light goes on when idling with a hot engine
When my engine is running a little hot, just a bit above normal operating temperature (usually in traffic), and I have my 911 in neutral the oil warning light goes on.
As soon as I put her in gear and give it some RPMs the light goes away. Actually, if I keep it in neutral and give it a little gas the light will go away but it will come right back when I let it idle again. My oil level is dead in the middle of the normal marks on the dip stick. I have a 1984 euro 911. Anybody have any ideas as to the problem? |

What's your oil pressure gauge reading at idle? Should be around 1 bar.

Either you have low oil pressure or your oil pressure switch for the idiot light is broken. Hopefully, the latter.

I'm using Mobil 1 15W-50.
I'll check the oil pressure light the next time it happens. |

In reading recently about my alternator issues, I saw one thread where the oil pressure light and alternator light had been reversed by a previous owner/mechanic.
It's worth checking, because a failing alternator would also begin to light up at idle and go away with RPM's. Craig

Pelican sells an oil fitting that goes between the block and the oil lines that feed the cams that is a little smaller internal diameter that is standard on newer cars than 84s that helps to boost oil pressure at idle. A number of people including me, have put them in.
Found it top of page this link http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/POR_911M_ENGcam_pg1.htm#item4

My instruction book says it's normal behaviour with a hot engine.
