sway bar-will a 87 fit a 83?
I have located a rear OEM sway bar off a 87 Carrera will it fit my 83SC? Just wondering if the G50 tranny changed any of the mounting points of the rear sway bar? The bar is a 21.5mm I'm told and it comes with clamps and bushings.

It should fit, the G-50 one has a bend in it, with new bushings it should work. You might wait for someone to BTDT.

It will fit for sure. You will need new bushings like John says. The hump in the bar just provides more clearance for the larger G50. Just make sure when you install in the hump is closer away from the tranny mount.
I gotta find a better word to describe it then "hump" ![]() It is a quick bolt on job. Jeff

I just recently installed later model carrera sway bars on my SC, the rear was a piece of cake, the front was a PITA. Made a big difference tho.
It looks like they are about 2mm larger in diameter than the stock ones, I wonder how much stiffer the spring rate is over stock? I think it's diameter cubed, need to get out the books. I got CRS. |

Thanks to all. I am planning on adding a 22mm OEM front bar and a 22mm ( 21.5?) OEM rear bar to my car. I have Bilstein rear sport shocks and I have Bilstein H.D. strut inserts to install in my Boge housings, does this sound like a good setup? My car is a street driver with occasional autocross and maybe once a year DE.

I just put the 22mm front and 21 mm rear sway bars on my SC. Like sammyg2 said, the front was a real pain but the difference is very noticable.

Borrowed from the Tech page on Torsion bars. But steel bar is steel bar, so you should be able to figure the difference in percentage between given swaybars, I would think.
"The formula for calculating spring rate is: k=d^4G where k=spring rate, d=diameter, G=modulus of elasticity (constant for steel)so ignoring the constant: % increase in stiffness = ( (d2^4)- (d1^4) ) / (d1^4) * 100 where d2 is new diameter and d1 is original diameter" Here's another from the RL board specifically on swaybars: "The effective spring rate (stiffness) of a swaybar is proportional to the bar diameter raised to the 4th power. If all other variables remain the same (bar length, arm length, material selection, etc., a 10% increase in diameter results in a 46% increase in stiffness. Check the Bosch Automotive Handbook, 4th edition, page 284 for the complete equation and diagram."
