early car speedo cable replacement

Does any one have any insight into what this entails? - i was thinking of snaking the new one through the tunnel with the old one - is this possible/vialble? Thanks again to all

It's not easy. YOu must remove the shifter and e-brake handles. There are several tabs that secure the cable inside the tunnel. Open the tab and pull the cable through. Tie a string to the back end by the tranny. this will help you fish the cable back through. The threaded collar will make it difficult to pull in spots. I remember it only coming out one way. I think it was trunk to tranny.

It will likely take several hours to pull a new cable.

To make it easier cut the old cable where the nut screws into the speedometer. This will keep the cable from hanging up inside the tunnel on the other cables. If you tie a string make sure it 's a stout one. Use 1/4" rope. my string broke when pulling new one in. You can't hook the new cable onto the old because the screw part for the transmission is too big to fit through the trunk opening behind the dash. You do not have to remove floorboard but removing the shift coupler cover at the back of the tunnel helps. This is a real PIA but it has to be done every so often because those cables break. Good Luck.
