What is it worth

I am looking at a 1978 SC which is for sale, the owner wants $12,000. Based on it's condition what is it worth. I am interested in back dating it.

1978 SC
77,000 miles
no records and has been sitting but runs
paint is very poor, but no rust
interior is ruff
all rubber and seals are dried and cracking
16 inch fuchs 7&6 inch

European car, all paper work in order purchased by military officer in 1982 while in Germany and been in states from 1988 to present.

sun roof
no ac
roll up window
bare bones car

With very ruff interior, very poor paint I feel the value if the motor is sound should be about $4,500- $5,500...........what do you think?

I would offer $10,000 and see what he says. A rust free tub with a good drive train has to be worth over $8,000 I would say

Tough to say but based on the info you gave I agree with your estimate, maybe up to 6-6.5 depending on the condition of the motor.

imho I think the owner is smoking something to ask 12g. I bought an 82SC with 100k on the car. It is in 98% condition and the interior is 100%. the car is all origional with records. power sun and windows with the 16 chrome fuchs 6&7 inch. I picked it up for 11.5g. I know I got a good deal but they are out there.
Good luck

I bought an 80 SC with similar condition but the exterior paint is not terrible for about 9K a couple months ago. And typically I have seen 3.0's go in the 4 to 4.5 range, but that is just me and I am no expert.

The problem with offering him 4500-5500 is he won't take it. If he is willing to wait a while he'll probably be able to find someone willing to pay 8-10K. So you can make a low offer, and if you are willing to wait try calling him back in a couple months to see if he's willing to come down. That is if he hasn't sold it yet....

Let's see, if all SC's are $20K cars in absolutely perfect condition, subtract:

$4000 New leather interior
$8000 Restoration quality paint job including all new seals
$2000 To undo the damages of sitting, install required upgrades, repack wheel bearings, flush brakes, align and balance, new tires, new battery, etc.

That leaves you with $6000 left to spend.

I would shop around a little. For $12-14K you should be able to find a car in better condition than this one will be in by the time you have $14K in it. Just take your time.

What is it worth

Thanks for the feed back. I am in a no-win situation. If I offer her what it is worth she will tell me to go to xxxx. I can not picture anyone with a smarts buying the car for anywhere near what she is asking.

For a candidate or starting point for a back date car or track car it's great and the chance of somebody buying a car without ac in Texas is slim. I would love to get it if the price is fair

12k is way too much - yet he will probably be offended if you offer the true amount. Quite possibly a no-win in order for you to own.

Price? 8k.
