Valspar paint - good or bad?

I am about to paint my car '76 S color code 936 (Silver)

. I was doing some research and got across a single-stage urethane at a very decent price. The brand is Valspar, since I haven't heard of this brand before I wonder if any of the paint experts in this forums can give me their impresssions on it.

Thanks

Personally I'd stick with Dupont or PPG, but they aren't the cheapest out there. I'm not a fan of single stage paint on street cars but if you go that route make sure you keep it waxed on a regular basis and it will look good for a lot longer.

The only Valspar product I really like is the SupaFil 21N polyurethane primer surface. Great stuff! I don't like their clears at all. The Universal Intermix System ColorBase is not horrible. I still use it from time to time but clear it with PPG 2042 . If cost was a major issue I would use it. But for not much more you could use Duponts Chroma Base Which I think is a really good base. Dupont has some great clears as well. But, if you were to ask me which paint you should use I would say PPG. PPG DBC base with PPG 2042 is a great system. Is costs a bit more but well worth it.

Are these paints water soluable? Are the older cars harder to paint because of older style paint? I was thinking of having just part of the car repainted and wanted a good match (white). I was thinking that older original paint may be hard to match or work with.

Meka,

i am still hesitating of using urethanepaint because of the safety issue. i plan to paint in my garage. i have already done almost all the prep work, including spraying of 2K kwik urethane primer/filler.

is the paint more dangerous that the primer? I don't have a porssite air respirator, so i am using the 3M Disposable Dual Cartridge Respirator with P95 filters. Is this enough in term of protecting my brain???

Thanks again for everyone's insight,

Mario,

P95 filters are particulate filters and provide no protection for organic vapors. Look for respirators with (Black) organic vapor cartridges.

The clears seem to me in general the most deadly. The urethane primer surfacer you used probably has many of the same chemicals as the paint and clear. Isocyanates and Benzene being some of the worst. In our shop we have three spray booths all set up with supplied fresh air. Full hood and half mask. I am stickler about making the guys use it. I would not want to take anyones health and safety in my hands. That being said, many people spray every day, all day and never use anything but a charcoal cartridge respirator. Use one and you will be fine. Talk to your paint vendor about which one to use. Do protect your skin all these chemical do absorb rapidly through the skin. Also try to find goggles with pull away lens.

One thing you could look into if you are still concerned is a small supplied air system. Neoterik and Axis Cooperation both make one for around $325.

Cool! The P95 is a pre-filter that will prevent the overspray from clogging the organic vapor cartriges.

Thats right! House Of Kolor is a division of Valspar Refinish Inc. We use it from time to time.
