Question 1970 911T Rust & Water in Carbs,etc...

Hi.....I am working on a 1970 911T Targa....bought it a month ago, it had been sitting for around 10 years, outside. The previous owner left the covers of the Carbs off --along with taking the spark plugs out. Carbs have rust & there is rust & water down the manifolds.

I am over hauling carbs right now......She has the the original carbs with matching number tag on Carbs (Zenith 40 TIN).....
Q#1: Is it better I rebuild and use these, or should I just go buy some Webers?
Q#2: Is there Anyway to clean properly and remove the stuff down those manifolds without taking the engine out? Yuck.......

THANK YOU~!
GRACE

I would guess you're in for an a top and bottom overhaul. Water probably in the cylinders with rusting rings, cylinder walls (iron), etc.

Water BAD!!!

Before you get to far, can you turn the motor over?
Most of the time someone pulls the plugs and quits driving a PORSCHE is because of some mechanical problems. You might be wasting you time trying to get it to run, when it has more problems than are obvious.
Good Luck, Bill

Thank you for The Reply Bob and Bill!

Nope, I can not turn her over, stay tuned though. This car was running fabulously until the previous owner left to work Overseas for 5 years, then after sitting, he could not start her and just gave up for another 5 years. I've got all the records on her, she was good to go before that point. But Now......

I've got a little transmission fluid and alot of Carb Cleaner filled in the manifolds, letting it soak for 24 hours. Besides trying to turn her over manually, I've tried pushing her too to try and turn her, she is frozen.

Q#3: If the above does not work, any ideas of what might work to get her turned over, before I go ahead and take out the engine?
THANK YOU!
Grace up the 911T Creek........

nick - considering the state you got it in, I wouldn't hestitate to pull it out and break it down. You've got to have allot of issues inside.

I've heard the Marvel Mystery Oil is good for this situation. YMMV.

I was in a similar situation as you - my PO let car sit for 4 years, supposedly ran great prior to a fuel delivery issue that caused him to park it. Once I got the fuel stuff worked out, the car smoked profusely at idle. I ended replacing intake valve guide seals in the car to help the smoking. Decided to change the exhaust valve guide seals for good measure only to find that most of my exhaust valve guides are worn beyond allowable tolerances. Bottom line is I spent a whole lot of time trying to quick fix problem after problem and in the end I still need a complete rebuild. I wish I would have spent all that time on rebuilding the motor from the start.

As far as the Zenith's go, I ended up rebuilding mine and they're working okay considering the problems with my engine.

Just my .02.

Good Luck,
Todd
