Photo Wanted: Targa top behind seats

Can one of you who stores you unfolded targa top behind the seats, please grab a couple of photos to show me how it's done? Every time I try, it interferes with the seatbelts. A major PITA. I understand that it can be slipped behind the seat belt bracket, but I have never been able to do it. Also, "leading edge" up or down?

I dont have any pics, but I store it leading edge up. The top is a tight fit, but if I'm by myself, I just move it a little to the left so that my seat shoulder belt will move good. If my bride's in the car, I move it more in the middle and try to get the edge around behind the bracket. I tried to fit it in the trunk, but its just a tad bit too big without folding it. Hope this helps.

Steve, now that I have my DAS bar in the back I can't store it there for anyh pic's. But, before I added the bar i was easy to fit my unfolded top behind my seats. I usually put leading edge down and the 'inside' facing forward. My seat belt mounts swiveled enough to allow me to easily slide the seat into the back seat. Front seats have to be forward enough to allow the top to fit - maybe cjeck the front seats are not too far back. We can experiment at VIR between runs.

Mine is at home right now with the top behind the seats it works great. And when you stop and need to put the top on for security just reach back there (works especially if you have someone with you) lift it out and pop it in place. Just realize the latches flip the seats forward, place the rear end of the top on the floor with it angled toward the seats, now slide one of the top corners back behind the seat belt and the other side will follow. Be sure that the seat belts are not caught on the top. I wont stand straight up but will lay back with the interior of the top exposed and pointing toward the front of the car. Don't know how much help this is ...I'll try to post a pic when I get home today.

I put the front edge down with the inside/headliner facing the front of the car. Then at the point where it looks tight near the belts I collapse the back edge (facing up) push it in and pull back up on the folding part. I will also post a pic. Folding it up in the front trunk realy wears it out quick so behind the seats is worthwhile.

When I had my '88 targa I would occasionally decide to put the top down when at a stop light. I could put the top behind the seats from the driver's seat. It just slides right in.

As s5 says, the key for me is to move the front seats up, then put the top in and angle it back against the back seats, then move the seats back some. If you are over 6'1, it will be difficult to then get the drivers seat back far enough. It is a little tight for me, and I'm 6'.

I put the front of the top down with the headliner towards the back of the car. Wish I had a photo for you.

I'm 6'2", and I didn't have any problem getting my seat far enough back, but then I may sit closer than most people.

I do mine the same as KC except I flip it so the mounting pins on the Targa top are facing up. I was worried I would break one otherwise........ takes only seconds to store it like this. Also, put a towel or something on the floor to avoid denting the trim edge from the center tunnel hump. YMMV -Chris

I was at a picnic and a targa owner said he put his unfolded in the front. I've never tried it. Would that be year dependent because of the brake master cylinder?

Guys thanks. KC, looks like yours is more angled back than I have been doing it. Maybe Emery and I can fool with it at VIR.

Yep you gotta angle it back, kick the bottom edge toward the seats. Unless I've got stuff in the back seats this is the only way I do it. makes for a very quick install when you need it. ...KC

The way I do it is just to fold it and put it on top of the folded back seats. I can do it at a stop light in about 10 seconds.

I think one of the reasons why many dont want to fold it (at least they will not admit it) is the great holy crap that hurts when you get your finger caught in the part that folds and yes that is the first place you put your hands because they are hard to fold, ask me how i know,
