Flag Mirror Help
I just got a couple 89 flag mirrors in & disassembly was a breeze. I want to paint them & put them on my 80 SC.
2 Questions: I'm not sure how to remove the mirror (the glass & backing) from the SC mirror assembly? Again the 89's were cake. I just moved a little plastic pin & rotated the assembly attached to the glass & they fell off. From looking at the SC, they don't seem to work this way at all. Secondly, will the wiring harness & motor operate using the wiring on my SC? In other words will I need to rewire anything to get those 89 motors to work? |

Here is an excerpt from a reply I wrote in a previous thread about removing the glass: First, remove the mirror glass by gently prying between the back edge of the glass and the adjustable portion behind it. If you have the original mirrors on the car, they'll be held in place at three points with an expandable body clip that is glued to the glass. If you can pry between this clip and the mirror base, so much the better, as these clips are glued to the back of the mirror and you don't want to break them off. Next, remove the three screws holding the adjustable base to the flag portion of the mirror and remove this part enough to get to the electrical connector behind it. Disconnect the connector halves and set the adjustable portion of the mechanism aside. Make a diagram of which wires go where into the connector half still attached to the car and remove the pins and wires from the connector. As for the wiring question, just look at a wiring diagram for both years and compare the two. I don't know off the top of my head if the pin arrangement stayed the same in the connector. Ok here is a follow up. I took the sc mirror off as suggested above. Worked like a charm. Here are a couple notes. I would strongly recommend using a plastic putty knife to separate the mirror from the motor housing. Metal + Glass = chipped glass. After the wires are removed you can use a 3/8 star socket to remove the hollow spring loaded bolt.

While pushing it up over a ramp you should use another small precision screwdriver to rotate the plastic thingy on the back of the mirror. There is a tiny slot that can be used to rotate this piece. Once that piece is rotated the mirror will fall off. |
khomul - did you ever get this to work. If so, how did you hook up the wires on the driver and passenger sides. I/m trying the same thing with 83 targa. No luck so far.

I actually didn't end up using the newer mirrors at all. The whole problem with my original mirror was that the hollow bolt was stripped. I simply replaced it with the one off the newer mirror. BUT those newer mirrors have to work. You are just going to have to break out the multimeter & dig up the wireing diagram. I have the sc workshop manual, when I get a chance next week I'll scan in the wireing diagram for the sc mirror & post it on this thread.

has anyone actually rotated that ring and the mirror glass just fell out, 2 hours at it and I am ready to just break it off:mad:
i even have a brand new set that is not assembled and once I set the mirror in the ring and turn it it is dam near impossible to get it back off and thats not in the housing. got to be some trick to this |
I just completed this little project on my 85 911 with flag mirrors. I just replaced the heated glass on the drivers side. I used a replacement mirror from an 84 944 which was super cheap and worked great. Only one thing to add to Javadog's thorough post... I used a pair of needle nose pliers to gently compress the flared posts within their plastic barrel receivers while prying the glass housing away from the metal mounting plate. When the pins for electrical connectors were exposed, I found it worked best to use a small flat screw driver to gently lever off the electrical connectors. ...and the mirror and backing plate came right off. Things went together smoothly in the reverse order. Now I am stoked to have a new car and to be able to see out the drivers mirror. Woohoo.

Folks I just had my mirror glass fall off, and am in need of another. I have an '87 Carrera, and it seems the car has the "twist" type of mirror mount. There are few replacement mirror glasses available for the 911 - but I see LOTS for an '89ish 944. Can anyone advise as to whether or not those would fit?
