Hey all,

In light of the current gas price situation, I thought I would pass along some info that has helped me out. I found a website that allows you to search for the cheapest gas prices in your area called Gas Price Watch It works by user submission, so I encourage anyone who likes the idea of being able to search for gas prices geographically, to create an account and submit prices in there area. Another cool feature is that you can set it to display the results by gas grade.

If you use a Mac and are running Tiger, there is a cool widget that you can run that polls the site automatically and displays the cheapest 9 stations. It also allows you to click on the station name and be taken to a google maps page for the station location.

BTW, I have no affiliation with gaspricewatch.com, just have found it useful, and wanted to pass it along.

Thank you I have been looking for this. I recently called several stations asking them their prices but was told that it was illegal to give out prices...is that crap? Some stations gave the their prices anyway. This solves the problem. I will spread the word.

Try gasbuddy.com . They seem to have a lot more gas stations listed. GPW didn't have a single gas station listed in Irvine (where I live and work), but gasbuddy had lots.

It is amazing,

I was on travel in LA this week. Usually the gas prices are 20 cents higher than here in Houston. I left LA at $2.98 a gallon for regular and got to Houston and saw $3.39 a gallon and that was my normal cheap spot. I guess we are more effected by the hell that the folks in New Orleans are experiencing. In light of that, I guess I should not complain...

I'm in Gernany now and gas is running...what?.... 1.25-1.30 Euro / liter. At 3.785 liters / gal...and figuring $1.22 / Euro.....that makes it... lessee..

about $6 / gallon .......

80% is "taxes"......

I have been told by associates from europe that so many people do not pay anything close to their actual income tax in most countries there, that the governments have resorted to VAT's and fuel consumption taxes as their major taxation.
Can anyone here tell me if that is correct or not? It makes a major difference in relative fuel costs if it's true, considering most of us in the US pay 15 to 30% of our income in taxes anyway. Taxes are a much smaller part of fuel costs here,,,10 to 15% max I think.

Porsche content: Fun runs are going to be less fun at >$3 gallon for gas here...

I believe you are correct....for example...i don't know how their public school system is funded, as well as a number of their social programs. You're correct to say that to get a better feel about this, we need to understand the total tax burden from all sources...

Still, the facts are what they are. Since I posted this the Hurricane situation has helped push up prices and unleaded premium here is 1.50 Euro / liter or close to.... $7.00 / gallon .

No that's pretty much completely untrue and wishful thinking at best. Taxes in Europe and the UK are simply much higher than in the US. In the UK we pay about 30+% of our income in direct tax then 17.5% VAT on virtually all goods and services and about 75% of the petrol price is tax - currently paying £1.01 for Shell Optimax per litre. we have the most expensive petrol in Europe!

In Europe, income taxes are in most countries even higher - with the top marginal tax rate up to 60% in some places.

I find it hard to believe that the revenue authorities are to any great extent less efficient in collecting taxes or policing tax avoidance than their US counterparts. The only exception I have observed in this respect (after 6 years of living in the UK and travelling in Europe) is that some small businesses choose to do business only in cash - mainly in the tourism sector. One can speculate that they under-report their incomes to the revenue, but this is becoming increasingly rare and I would guess that some parts of the US have the same issues.

The bottom line is europeans pay a lot more tax than our US friends. Why? Look no further than generally excellent state funded comprehensive healthcare, education, social welfare and pension systems, the amazing high speed rail network, great motorways etc.

BTW, I am not saying Europe is better or worse than the US, I am just trying to highlight some differences

Porsche content? Great state funded roads include the Nurburgring !

Well feel sorry for us Aussies.

We are one of the highest taxed countries in the world (average 33% + a 10% GST) and are now paying about $5.30 a gallon for fuel here. Our education, medical and general infrastructure spending is reducing (per capita) and we do not have the wonderful high speed rail network, great motorways that Europe has at the moment.

we do have those wonderful beaches though...

Europe simply doesn't subsidize auto/truck travel the way we do in the US. despite the income taxes there, the VAT is a much higher proportion of the tax base than in most US states or cities (using sales taxes as a rough analog of VAT).
