Fuel Tank Replacement

Thought I would share my refurbished fuel tank job with you.

Tank was leaking from the rear, and further 'pulling' at the undercoat only exposed more rust and more leaking !

Tank was removed and the decision taken to go straight for a refurbished tank. Came from Porsch-Apart at £295 ($550) and looks very nice in black and has two year warranty.

At the same time, I cleaned and painted the belly pan and fuel pump bracket with hammerite smooth blue. I also replaced the two 'cotton reels' that mount the fuel pump bracket.

A new seal was fitted to the tank, and the whole lot refitted.

I also removed an odd looking arrangement at the screen wash pump, whereby the outlet pipe split in to two although one of them was plugged with a screw - I now have one in and one out - hope this is OK.

Have put in one gallon of gas and fired her up - no leaks !!!

Will fill up at the weekend and post final picture of clean trunk area.

Little dull, but I enjoy sharing these pictures and mini projects.

Thanks for reading....

Tank is now in

The tank is now fitted and no leaks !!!

Only problem is the washer motor - how on earth do you get the three rubber 'legs' to push back in to the holes in the front panel ???

I've got the same question with the windshield washer pump. I have no idea how you can get those things back in the holes. I was considering zip ties but it has been working well just sitting on the trunk floor.

To get the rubber mounts for the washer pump installed, insert the tip of one through it's hole and pull it through from the other side with a pair of needle nose pliers. Repeat two more times.

Thanks JR.

With the front bumper and spolier being close together, there is just room to pull through the top rubber 'foot'. Other two are inaccessable, but holds up OK for me.

All I have to do now is get the sender properly earthed to stop the guage needle from fluttering between 2/4 and Full.

Thanks,
