What are the stock exhaust manifolds and heater shrouds made of? I'm cleaning mine (bought a Fabspeed premuff from our host, and it makes the rest of the exhaust look like something out of a dumpster!) and am wondering how best to finish these parts. They seem to be stainless, but they are magnetic. Both pipes and shrouds polish up easily. but the factory painted the shrouds a flat grey that regular paint stripper won't touch. I've seen the phrase "rusted out heat exchangers" frequently on this BB, but I don't see how, unless earlier models were plain steel. ( like my 912 heat boxes) Any metalurgists out there?

They are mild steel and by the way not all stainless materials are non magnetic.. Hope this helps

Early heat exchangers were definitely mild steel. Some time in the mid 70's Porsche started making the heat exchanger tin out of stainless. They also started making the replacement heat exchangers of earlier models out of stainless. Thus in the 80's one could buy a heat exchanger for a 72' model and it would have a stainless exchanger housing. I'm not so sure that the pipes inside of the exchanger were stainless also.
MB911 is very correct in saying that using a magnet for a stainless test doesn't always work. If it did, none of those magnetic knife holders in kitchens would work now days. David Duffield |
