Oil Change Frequency 86 Carrera & Burn rate?

Hi,

The Bentley says every 6000 miles, I am at 3000 since bought this 86, where I used to do this for my watercooled machines.

Whats the word? I'll be using 20-50 mineral oil.

On burnrate, I have no oil leaks in the car, but it burns a bit of oil on startup (smell) and the compession ranges 145-160 last check---valve guides/adjustment time? I put in a quart over the last 3k...

Thanks,
Todd

3k tp 5k miles between changes is fine and mineral oil is what you want. If you do lots of cold starts and short trips 3K. If runs are usually longer than 30 min 5k intervalls.

Burning a little bit of oil is O.K. If you don't have to put in more than say a couple of quarts between changes don't worry about it.

The valves need adjustment every 15k miles. The valve guides can only be replaced (AKA top-end overhaul) They ususally are due between 60k and 120k miles. Leaky valve guides show up as smoke under decelaration.

Other sources where oil gets into the combustion chamber are rings or overfilling the car. Make sure the engine is a operating temps and idling when you check the level. If you check it cold chances are you end up putting 3 quarts too much into the tank. That oil gets ingested into the intake and makes the car smoke like a crop-duster.

Cheers,
Ingo

Hey, thanks for the reply. Defintely not crop dusting, got one
puff I noticed under hard acceleration when the oil seemed LOW.

What about compression numbers and valve adjustments/guides?

I knew when I bought the car the inspection numbers ranged from 145 - 160 and I am wondering when that needs to be levelled out. Rings? (gulp)!

Off to read the Bentley Manual!
