Headers for 911s
 

I need to replace my heat exchangers on my 71T 2.2 and I'm on a tight budget right now. I would like to go all stainless but that is big $$$. Does anyone have any thoughts on headers... brands available, size, mufflers, etc. or should I just wait and go to all stainless when the bucks are there. Also is a slight exhaust leak going to cause problems now or down the road?

I posed the same question not too long ago. There are true headers out there, but are mostly high end stuff. For your application I think Bursch is the only economical set.(about $400 from our host I think) Then the only muffler that will fit is also Bursch (imagine that!) But you can probably get a local custom exhaust shop to mod something to fit. (muffler) I had a Bursch exhaust on my 912, and it sounded good and as one local Porsche guru said at one autocross " thats the fastest 912 I've ever seen!! My times were always right in the middle of all the 911's, so I was pretty happy with my mods and the exhaust. Only down side is all Bursh stuff is mild steel, but you can have it ceramic coated, and it will last longer and look good!
SLIGHT exhaust leak? If it's at the exhaust port at the head, it will errode the port, and then you have a big problem. If it's elswhere, not a problem.
Also, you will lose your heat when you switch to headers, they don't have heat muffs!:eek:

The factory heat exchangers are part stainless in the 73/74 cars .I would watch ebay or advertize here for good used stuff. The Bursch stuff is ordinary mild steel and can rust out in a couple of years

bursch headers fit with the stock bannana exhaust.

FI Ted, I'm was thinking of "Headers" as in the Bursch mentioned, also my slight exhaust leak is on the right side heat exchanger at one of the individual pipes, not at the head.

have 72 he's on my sc right now but have ssis "in the mail as youwill". they have no heat exchanger left on them(as they were rusted and cut off) but are lovely if you are so inclined as to coat them before installation. let me know if you are interested. i'll sell 'em cheap... felix_browne @hotmail.com (remove space btw e&@ used to combat spam)

tho have not done on the sc, have had great experience with george's headers on both an early and an 87 carrera. fantastic for both street and trak/once i get the ssis, will have 15 permutations for exhaust setups and can give more feedback if you should so desire.

with any other car, a leaky exhaust is a serious safety concern, as you will be breathing the fumes. on a 911, you've got a monster fan diluting the exhaust escaping prior to the muffler/tailpipe, and it's all behind you, so i would say it's mostly extra noise. of course, let it get bad enough and the heat exchangers will break clean thru.
