Bike rack for 911 Coupe?

I'd like to transport 1 bicycle with my 911 Coupe but I don't want to install a permanent roof rack or anything that will harm the body/paint. My car does *not* have a tail so I'm thinking I might be able to get one of those rear-hitch type racks.

Does anyone have experience with these rear-hitch racks? Will they scratch or harm the rear deck lid? I'm currently thinking about the following rack:

Saris Bones

I've searched the boards but have not found the solution yet.

I use a Thule on my SC. I like the roof mount style becasue of the versatility.

Got pictures?

Do you keep the roof rack attached at all times or only when needed?

I don't have any pics, and I don't have a working digi cam right now. I take it off when not in use. It hasn't scratched the paint ( not that the paint is in good condition anyway) or casued any other damage. My favorite attachement is the roof basket though. This allows me to carry all my work gear, so that I can drive it to work when I have to drive somewhere other than my usuall 2 minute commute.

How long does it take to attach and deattach the roof rack?

Makaio,

I am curious in your roof rack setup. I would love to setup a Thule rack so I can transport my surfboard. I assume your mounting the rack on the rain gutters?

I seem to remember seeing a roof rack for a targa some time ago. I would be interested in one. Now that I have a son and I want to go to the 05 Parade I will need some extra room (No I will never get a PepperWagon) would love to be able to load up a roof rack.

Haven't had to do it yet, but if I was carrying my bike in the car I would take off both wheels and put it all in one of those big roof top bags, then carefully place it in the commodious back seat area.

I think "commodious" means big, not "like unto a toilet".

Thuleroof rack really would be the best bet. Easy on, easy off, attachs to gutters. Any bike shop should be able to help you out. I saw a thule rack on a cab once. Owner took it on and off almost daily.

takes less then 10 minutes to put on or take off a thule or yakama rack, I've carried quite a few surf boards on them so i am sure it will handle 1 bike with the proper attachments

5-10 minutes to install the rack. Really a piece of cake.

I have a Blackburn that has a foam pad that sits on top of the rear bumper and straps that grab onto the top of the decklid....one minute install. Fits over the turbo tail and duck tail that I have had on my SC.

I've put my 650c triathlon bike in the rear seats with the wheels off. Keeps it out of the weather.

Coupes have the old style roof gutters - perfect & strong for racks.

I think those rear racks may be OK on the rear lid, but that the lower feet need to sit on the bumper which may scratch a bit.

I have the Yakima rack system on the other car, not the 911. However they do make the gutter mounting clips for 911 applications. The Yakima Steelhead bicycle mount (locking), grips the bicycle's front fork(without the wheel) while the rear tire sits in the aluminum tray and is strapped down.
I've seen what can happen to bicycles on rear racks. Either you accidentally back into something or someone drives there car into your bike (usually when parking), and sometimes the hot exhaust pops the bike tire if too close.
The roof rack, you have to remember if you have a bike on top especially if you need to clear a MAX 8'6" HEADROOM of your parking garage.

Any tips on how to fit the bike in? I have a 650 Quintana Roo, but I've never attempted to put it in the back b/c it doesn't "look" like the Aero Bars will fit

That's Phoenix's car. Man I remember when he had his engine incident. What a shame.

I put a standard Yakima gutter-mount setup on 20 years ago, works great, goes quickly on and off, and rubber where the mounts touch the car protects the paint unless you pour sand in the gutters before mounting the rack.

Just don't go ripping up I-70 with 10 pairs of skis across the roof -- clear prop!

Just a side comment - when you put your roof rack on and the bike on top, put your garage door opener in the glove compartment.

A tip a friend gave me, AFTER he had driven into the garage with a bike on top of his car...

Does anyone have an update on the best (quick on/off, safe for the paint) type of roof racks?

Cheers,
David
